The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail, also called the D&R Canal Trail or the towpath, is an over 70-mile trail that follows a 19th-century canal. “It’s a very popular spot where you can rent kayaks and boats, or you can go for a walk,” Sudal says. The Millstone River is another option for kayaking and fishing. The nearly 700-acre Colonial Park is nearby, and there are four golf courses within 4 miles of the community. Blackwells Mills experiences all four seasons, with summer highs in the 80s and winter lows in the 20s.

A car-reliant community with commuter train options
U.S. Route 206 is nearby, leading about 9 miles to Somerville and 11 miles to Princeton. Commuters can take the New Jersey Transit train to get to New York, located 53 miles away. “You’re kind of between two train stations,” Sudal says. “You have to go to the Princeton Junction station to get on the train. The train is one hour to New York, but you need 20 to 30 minutes to drive to the station.” A new train station is coming to North Brunswick, which will be about 10 minutes closer than Princeton Junction; the project is currently in the design phase.
While there are some bike lanes and sidewalks within the community, residents will have to drive to amenities. Newark Liberty International Airport is a 36-mile trip. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset is 8 miles away. Crime data for Blackwells Mills is not readily available.
Farm markets nearby and national retailers a short drive away
Many of the community’s farms have markets that sell local produce, and residents can join a Community-Supported Agriculture program to receive weekly vegetables. Restaurants and retail stores are about 4 miles away in Hillsborough, with more options about 10 miles away in Somerville and Bridgewater, including Bridgewater Commons, an indoor shopping mall with over 150 stores.
