Industrial area turned Mayberry

Once part of the thriving steel industry, Blawnox, 10 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh, is now a residential area with a growing commercial district. Blawnox is named after Blaw and Knox, the early 20th-century steel companies that merged to become Blaw-Knox. The company was a major employer in the area but closed the facility in 1991. From there, Blawnox became more residential and community-orientated. The borough cares for its residents through the Blawnox Community Food Pantry, which provides nonperishable food and toiletries to those in need. “It's like going back to Mayberry,” says Rob Strohm, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty Service’s Fox Chapel office. “Everybody knows everybody in that town. Don't blink. You'll be through it.”

Summer Art Fling, Night of Lights

The Best of Blawnox is a community organization that aims to engage residents with events throughout the year. In June, the organization hosts the Summer Art Fling, bringing local art exhibits, live music and vendors to Freeport Road. The Community Events Committee, part of the Blawnox Borough, hosts a holiday event called Night of Lights, which incorporates a Holiday Cookie Tour and a sign-decorating event. Each Dec. 1, residents are encouraged to pick up a sign at the borough office and decorate it with a holiday-themed message. The next day, residents visit the business district to sample holiday cookies and shop for Christmas gifts. The night closes with caroling and a tree-lighting at the Hoboken Presbyterian Church. Residents may also visit St. Edward Church, Montrose Union Church or others in the area to celebrate religious holidays or services.

Live music on Freeport Road

Old Thunder Brewing Company makes its own brews in the old post office building. The local brewery provides weekly food trucks for patrons and hosts trivia nights and watch parties. Weekly live music is performed at the Starlite Lounge, which has been featured on the Food Network. Starlite’s owner, Ron “Moondog” Esser, also owns Moondog’s next door, which has become a local blues institution with a far-reaching reputation. Residents wishing to become musicians can walk from Moondogs to N Stuff Music, a family-owned instrument store offering instrument rentals and lessons. Groceries are available a mile down the main drag at the Giant Eagle Market District.

Very quiet neighborhood located in Fox Chapel school district. There is a lot of job opportunities including the industrial park and St. Margaret Hospital. There is plenty of shopping and dinning options close by at the Water Works Mall.
