Industrial area turned Mayberry
Once part of the thriving steel industry, Blawnox, 10 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh, is now a residential area with a growing commercial district. Blawnox is named after Blaw and Knox, the early 20th-century steel companies that merged to become Blaw-Knox. The company was a major employer in the area but closed the facility in 1991. From there, Blawnox became more residential and community-orientated. The borough cares for its residents through the Blawnox Community Food Pantry, which provides nonperishable food and toiletries to those in need. “It's like going back to Mayberry,” says Rob Strohm, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty Service’s Fox Chapel office. “Everybody knows everybody in that town. Don't blink. You'll be through it.”
Blawnox sits on the Allegheny River about 20min from downtown Pittsburgh.

Summer Art Fling, Night of Lights
The Best of Blawnox is a community organization that aims to engage residents with events throughout the year. In June, the organization hosts the Summer Art Fling, bringing local art exhibits, live music and vendors to Freeport Road. The Community Events Committee, part of the Blawnox Borough, hosts a holiday event called Night of Lights, which incorporates a Holiday Cookie Tour and a sign-decorating event. Each Dec. 1, residents are encouraged to pick up a sign at the borough office and decorate it with a holiday-themed message. The next day, residents visit the business district to sample holiday cookies and shop for Christmas gifts. The night closes with caroling and a tree-lighting at the Hoboken Presbyterian Church. Residents may also visit St. Edward Church, Montrose Union Church or others in the area to celebrate religious holidays or services.
