Lakewood Hillcrest has a low housing inventory, similar to the city of Bloomington overall. “We’ve been going on at least two years, if not longer, where there’s almost never been more than even 100 houses for sale in all of Bloomington-Normal," Hansen says.
Local students may start off at Stevenson Elementary School, which has a B-minus rating on Niche. Middle school students transition to Bloomington Junior High School, also holding a B-minus rating. For high school, students attend Bloomington High School, rated A-minus on Niche. Students with qualifying grades can take advantage of dual enrollment programs at Heartland Community College. The dual enrollment courses include engineering, web development, and the arts. The neighborhood is also close to Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University.
Residents of Lakewood-Hillcrest benefit from convenient transportation options, even with limited public transit provided by the Connect Transit bus system. The neighborhood is well-connected to major highways, with Interstate 55 providing a direct route to cities such as Joliet, Towanda, and Chicago. Clearwater Avenue offers easy access to the Central Illinois Regional Airport, just 3 miles away. While the Connect Transit bus service operates throughout Bloomington, most residents find it convenient to drive.
Lakewood-Hillcrest is close to several parks and green spaces, providing ample opportunities for outdoor activities. Clearwater Park features a playground, sand volleyball court, picnic areas, and a walking path. McGraw Park includes a softball diamond, water play area, and playground equipment.
Shopping and dining in Lakewood-Hillcrest are both convenient and varied. The neighborhood's hub, Lakewood Plaza, includes a Hy-Vee Supermarket, Mega Replay for entertainment, and Clothes Mentor for fashion. Residents can also find practical stops, including Dollar Tree, Sport Clips Haircuts, and VP Nail & Spa.For dining, there’s a variety of options. Super JJ Fish & Chicken is popular for its fried fish and chicken platters, while it's all about buffet-style dining at Pizza Ranch. Ancho & Agave serves traditional Mexican dishes accompanied by specialty margaritas.
While Lakewood Hillcrest itself doesn’t host many neighborhood-specific events, residents enjoy the annual festivities in Bloomington-Normal, including the popular Sweet Corn Circus held each August in Uptown Normal. This two-day event celebrates the area’s agricultural roots, bringing the community together for a weekend of food, vendors, and live performances.
