Bloomington neighborhood bordering IU
A small ranch-style house made of enameled steel faces Mitchell Street in Bloomington’s Eastside neighborhood. This structure, known as a Lustron house, is a type of prefabricated home designed to address the housing shortage post-World War II. Only manufactured from 1948 to 1950, in these historically significant homes owners could hang pictures on the walls with magnets or use a hose to rinse clean the exteriors. While Eastside doesn’t have any other all-metal homes, many here enjoy the quaint character imbued by the lone Lustron house. “I would say the homes there are smaller, as opposed to Elm Heights, which has much more stately, historic homes. It’s an area where traditional staff from the university might live, whereas Elm Heights is more faculty,” says Angela Van Rooy, Bloomington’s neighborhood services program manager. The community's proximity to Indiana University also puts the neighborhood at the doorstep of renowned institutions like the Jacobs School of Music. “In terms of those types of amenities, for people who like theater or music, it’s right there at your fingertips,” Van Rooy says.
Charming homes dating as far back early 20th century
“Because of the proximity to campus, there’s a good mix of owner-occupied and rental properties,” Van Rooy says commenting on the makeup of Eastside’s housing. The neighborhood has many homes built between the turn of the 20th century and the post-World War II era. Craftsman bungalows and ranch-styles make up much of the area's architecture. Many houses here also boast limestone exteriors, a common trademark of Bloomington homes. While Eastside has many compact lots, most no larger than a quarter-acre, a few homes' footprints do exceed a half-acre. Homeowners here tend to decorate their lawns with colorful gardens and dense shrubbery; and price points can go from just under $300,000 for a roughly 1,000-square-foot house to nearly $600,000 for a home that's nearly three times bigger.
Deep-dish pizzas and crumble cakes along East Third and Atwater
While Eastside isn’t far from downtown Bloomington’s dining and bar scene, it is closer to several staples between East Third Street and Atwater Avenue. Deep-dish pies and cold beers can be enjoyed at Mother Bear’s Pizza Campus. Patrons of this cabin-inspired establishment can also have fun scribbling messages on its wooden booths. Neighboring Restaurant Ami is a go-to spot for sushi and other Japanese fare. While busy mornings means grabbing a latte and a pastry from the Crumble Coffee and Bakery. A few blocks east, Viva Mas serves Mexican fare in a space adorned with Aztec and tropical-themed decor; and the restaurant connects to the shopping area anchored by the College Mall. Kroger is one of several grocery store options, while those looking for farm fresh produce can stop by the Bloomingfoods Co-op Market East.
Close to Bloomington’s biggest public pool
The closest city green space is Bryan Park, about 1 mile west of Eastside. Located in a neighborhood of the same name, the park’s amenities include several basketball and tennis courts. The green space recently renovated its playground and also features additional equipment for those who want to do some outdoor calisthenics. The most popular site here, however, is the Bryan Park Pool, which draws crowds during the summer. The facility is the city’s biggest public pool and includes attractions like spiraling water slides. Eastside is also a few miles north of the Southeast YMCA, which provides facilities from weight and fitness rooms to basketball and pickleball courts.
Highly rated schools and special focus at Binford Elementary
Binford and Rogers elementary schools, which are right outside of the neighborhood, receive A and A-minus grades respectively from ratings site, Niche. The two schools share a campus, but Binford only serves students in kindergarten through second grade. Students may then attend Jackson Creek Middle School and Bloomington High School South, which both receive A grades from Niche. BHHS’s activities include a robotics club, and Niche ranks the school as the 12th best high school for STEM in the state. Eastside also neighbors the St. Charles School, a private Catholic institution affiliated with the St. Charles Borromeo Church. The private school, which receives an A-minus grade from Niche, serves pre-kindergarten to eighth grade.
Close to IU and downtown Bloomington festivities
With Indiana University (IU) nearby, many here can conveniently attend events like the First Thursdays festival series, which occurs in both the fall and spring. The series involves a variety of artistic performances around the university’s Fine Arts Plaza. Residents here can also go to several annual downtown Bloomington events like the Holiday-themed Canopy of Lights. Attendees of this November event will experience expansive lights display, as well as hot chocolate, snacks and live music performances.
East Third connection to downtown Bloomington
East Third Street runs directly to downtown Bloomington, which is about 1 mile west of Eastside. East Third also has several Bloomington Transit bus stops for those needing public transportation. The nearby State Road 45 bypass connects the neighborhood to major institutions like the IU Health Bloomington Hospital. The bypass also runs to Interstate 69, which commuters take to reach Indianapolis. Those going on out-of-state flights typically go to the Indianapolis International Airport about 45 miles north of Bloomington.
