South Indiana farmland community within minutes of Monroe Lake
In the 1830s, many settlers from Harrodsburg, Kentucky, traveled to southern Indiana to start a new life. As a result, this neighborhood in rural Monroe County adopted the same name. Harrodsburg of Bloomington, Indiana, however, belongs to a group of mostly farmland communities that still have historic landmarks like old barns dating back to the 19th century. The community is also located within minutes of Lake Monroe, a nearly 11,000-acre reservoir that anchors this park space and is known as the largest man-made lake in the state. “It’s quiet, fairly quiet, and there’s some good schools within close proximity of the area,” says Brad Bell, a member of the Harrodsburg Church of Christ, which has been in the area for over 150 years. “It’s close to Lake Monroe, and there’s a nice golf course — two golf courses actually — that are within 4 or 5 miles of the place. Those are some of the highlights.”

Craftsmen, ranch-style houses and unique Gothic and Traditional blends
Although much of Harrodsburg consists of farmland, denser housing exists at the heart of the community. Ranch-style homes and Craftsman bungalows are just two of the more common styles. The community also has a distinct string of Victorian-era homes that blend Gothic Revival and Traditional designs. Some homes have even stayed within the same families for multiple generations. “I moved away, moved back and bought a house half a block away from my parents. Then, I bought my grandparents’ house that was next door to my parents and kind of helped take care of them as they got older,” says Paul Strain, president of the Harrodsburg Heritage Days Festival. “So yeah, as I got older and had kids, I was like, ‘I’m going back home.’” While not many homes have sold in Harrodsburg recently, the costs remain between $150,000 and $300,000 for a single-family home.

Lake Monroe’s outdoor haven
Many rent out the Harrodsburg Community Center for small gatherings and celebrations, and the facility anchors a small park with a basketball court and playground. However, the area’s primary attraction is Lake Monroe. In addition to the water- and beach-oriented activities, this outdoor haven offers miles of natural hiking trails that cut through dense woodlands and various campsites are also found here. Nature lovers looking for more adventures can spend a day at the Cedar Bluff Nature Preserve, known for its prominent limestone bluff and creek views. Avid golfers can also choose between the Stone Crest Golf Community and the Golf Club at Eagle Pointe near Lake Monroe.

Parade, craft fair and fish fry at the annual Heritage Days Festival
This community has hosted the Harrodsburg Heritage Days Festival since 1986, and the event occurs over the course of a few days each May. “It’s our main event. It celebrates - and helps finance - our community center,” Strain says. “We have a fish fry, and there’s always bands. We have a carnival, music, craft fair and a big parade. It’s kind of like a bit of a reunion for the town, too. Everyone kind of comes back, and you see all your friends.”
