Historic village honors military veterans
Encompassing part of Rothrock State Forest, a nearly 100,000-acre natural area in the Appalachian Mountains, Harris Township is a suburban community with small-town charm. In 1809, land speculator Andrew Stroup sold $11 plots of land in a lottery, creating what would eventually become Boalsburg village. During the Civil War, many of the area’s men went to fight for the Union Army. As a result, Harris has long honored and celebrated military veterans, becoming the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1864. Originally called “Decoration Day,” the community came together to decorate the local graves of those who died during service. Today, the community features the Pennsylvania Military Museum, a Memorial Day festival that brings in 25,000 people annually and monuments throughout the township. Around this small community, there’s a village square with local restaurants, several parks and a historic theater. With its proximity to State College, residents here can also visit the city’s shopping centers, downtown attractions and sports games at Pennsylvania State University.
