Boggs Township 30 minutes from Penn State University
Once a part of the Juniata Iron District, Boggs Township is 21 miles from State College and home to the longest-running charcoal iron plantation in central Pennsylvania. Eagle Iron Works no longer produces plumes of thick, black smoke as workers toil within the facility or mine for ore, though the site still sits in its original location over 200 years later. The iron works and the surrounding Curtin Village are preserved, restored and maintained by the state and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The township's rolling rural hills offer the area a pastoral atmosphere with protected State Game Lands, open green spaces and a nearby state park where residents may hunt, fish and hike. The area also has access to Interstate 80 and state routes, with a small stretch of restaurants and homes along South Eagle Valley Road. Many residents enjoy the open spaces and the proximity to Penn State University, the largest employer in the area. The CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10. which is below the national average of 4.

Apple Festival at antique Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Village
Events are hosted at the historic Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Village. The site was established in 1810 by Andrew Gregg Curtin, the governor of Pennsylvania, during the Civil War. Curtin and his family lived in the Ironmaster’s mansion, which can still be visited today. Eagle Iron Works, a well-preserved and restored iron center, produced iron from 1810 to 1921. The Worker’s Village, a small collection of cottages, is undergoing restoration. Guided tours are on the second and fourth Sunday of each month from June through September. In October, the Curtin Village Apple Festival offers an apple dessert contest, a chicken dinner and other activities such as face painting and goat petting. Residents of Bellefonte, 9 miles away, may take a train to the event, where they can see the fall foliage at Bald Eagle State Park before enjoying an apple treat at the festival. Residents visit the Center County Library to check out a book, movie, audiobook or attend weekly events. “Our most popular event is probably our storytimes that we host every week,” says Megan Strommer, the youth series coordinator at the Centre County Library in Bellefonte. The library also offers film and book discussions, take-home crafts and a play area for families. “We have toys, a train table and a kitchen set,” says Strommer. “Children and their families are welcome to come in and play with it.” Religious services are held at Summit Hill Wesleyan Church, Curtin United Methodist Church and Freedom Life.
