Historic neighborhoods with downtown proximity and recreation
Considered one of Boise’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods, East End has a storybook feel. Architecture here varies, from whimsical Victorian structures to 100-year-old bungalows, and outdoor recreation is all over, from the banks of the Boise River to the trails of the hilly Military Reserve. The neighborhood is 2 miles from downtown, which has many restaurants, shopping and city amenities like hospitals and residences. “It’s one of the more desired areas. Typically, houses don’t come for sale as often, and they go quicker,” says John Crowley, realtor at Keller Williams Boise and East End resident. “I’d say seven months of the year, my wife and I occasionally ride downtown easily because the weather is good and it’s totally flat,” Crowley adds.

Quiet suburb with Victorian mansions and older bungalows
With its craftsman bungalows, brick ranch-style houses and a street of Victorian and Queen Anne properties, East End has a historical appearance. “The East End has much older homes, generally smaller than the average homes being built right now,” Crowley says. The oldest properties are more than 100 years old and located closer to downtown. Victorian and Queen Anne structures sit along Warm Springs Avenue; they belonged to wealthy people in Boise’s early days. East End includes Foothills East, a hilly area where the homes tend to be more spacious. Older homes range from $500,000 to $1 million, and Warm Springs Avenue homes cost between $1 million and $2.4 million. Homes around Foothills East range from $650,000 for ranch-style homes to more than $3.7 million for custom properties.
Most of the neighborhood is in a quiet, secluded location in the city with little car traffic. Residents walk around the neighborhood year-round, even when it gets cold, and streets are heavily shaded because of tall trees along the sidewalks. People often stay for generations, and neighbors become family. “Most neighbors are friends, and everybody is looking out for each other,” says Gordon Trounson, an East End resident. “Our neighbor’s Christmas lights were not on. She forgot to plug them in, so we found the plug and plugged them in for her. So, it’s that kind of thing.”

Easy access some of the city's best trails
Thanks to all the nearby recreation, residents can maintain an active lifestyle. The Military Reserve is a 734-acre park with 360-degree views of Boise and its mountainous terrain. Hikers can try out multiple trails, and bikers can test their skills within the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation Bike Park, which has tracts built for all skill levels. “The bike park is relatively new, but people from other cities go into the city and say it’s comparable,” Crowley says. Along the Boise River is Kristin Armstrong Municipal Park, which spans 28 acres including bocce courts and a playground. The park also has an entrance point to the Boise Greenbelt, a major trail stretching 25 miles along the river. The Idaho Botanical Garden and the Old Idaho Penitentiary sit next to each other on the area’s east side; they each have entrances to multiple trails, one of which is the Table Rock Trail. The trail leads to the Table Rock landmark, which is made of sandstone and overlooks the entire city. Next to Adams Elementary is the Natatorium Pool. “In summertime, you'd see much activity,” Crowley says. “Many kids head that way throughout the day, and then, in the evening, people will also head there.” Golfers can play 18 holes at Warm Springs Golf Course.

The Roosevelt Market: A neighborhood treasure and grocery store
The Roosevelt Market is one of the last few neighborhood markets in Boise. Established in the 1900s, the small café blends in with East End’s collection of older homes. Residents come inside for morning coffee or a quiet space to work. The menu includes a variety of coffee beverages and paninis. It also has a collection of grocery items like wines, pasta and candy. Outside this market, folks can find other restaurants in Downtown Boise. Fork is a sophisticated restaurant and wine bar in the heart of downtown; it specializes in farm-to-table dishes and serves wines from the Pacific Northwest region. Off Bown Way is a collection of trendy restaurants, including Lovejoy’s Real Ice Cream and Cravin’s Candy Emporium, which serve sweet treats like candy, ice cream and cookies. Grocery stores in and around East End include Whole Foods Market and M&W Market, which doubles as a gas station.

Concerts and cocoa at the Idaho Botanical Garden
Besides being active for recreational purposes, residents can be socially active thanks to several nearby events. The Idaho Botanical Garden hosts annual summer concerts that attract thousands of people every summer. When winter comes, the garden is lit with bright colors for the holidays at their Winter Garden aGlow event. Visitors can spend their evenings with a cup of hot chocolate and tour the gardens as local choirs sing. Up the way on Warm Springs Avenue is the theater for the Idaho Shakespeare Festival; the 770-seat outdoor theater holds frequent summer performances including plays and mini concerts.
