Bikes, beer and more in Hyde Park
The North End is perhaps best known for Hyde Park, a historic district at the neighborhood’s heart. Established in the 1890s, this small cluster of tree-shaded blocks once served as Boise’s premier satellite shopping area. Many residents can take a leisurely walk to Hyde Park’s independent businesses, including two bicycle shops. “I see more people riding bikes here in the middle of the winter than in California in the summer,” Hagen says. Popular Hyde Park eateries include Java Hyde Park, a quaint coffee and breakfast spot with an outdoor patio. Jars of colorful goodies pack the shelves of Goody’s Soda Fountain, where customers can buy handmade chocolates, ice cream and more over the counter. Lost Grove Brewing welcomes patrons to stay late and enjoy conversations with friends while sipping original craft beers. Residents can grab groceries elsewhere in the neighborhood, either at Albertsons or the thriving Boise Co-op.From contemporary condos to century-old estates
Over a century of Boise's history lives on in the North End’s residential architecture. “Most houses were built from the 1890s to the 1920s,” Hagen says. “So, you’ll see a lot of Victorian, Queen Anne and Foursquare houses.” Homebuyers will also spot ranch- and Cape Cod-style cottages, Arts and Crafts designs and bungalows throughout the neighborhood. Homes along the central Harrison Boulevard — listed in the National Register of Historic Places — are often large and ornate. Conversely, smaller North End properties are available in contemporary condominium buildings. Two-bedroom condos around 900 square feet start at around $300,000. Homebuyers might find a four-bedroom ranch-style home for the neighborhood’s median home price of about $740,000. Prices top out around $2.7 million, which could buy a five-bedroom Queen Anne house with a backyard pool on Harrison Boulevard.Dirt trails with mountain and city views
North End residents often visit Camel’s Back Park for its tennis courts, sand volleyball court, outdoor gym and playground. However, its standout feature is its connection to the Camel’s Back Reserve, a 63-acre expanse introducing locals to the Boise foothills. Its hilly dirt trails offer hikers and mountain bikers unique views of the mountains to the north and the city to the south. Camel’s Back Park is home to the annual Hyde Park Street Fair. Since 1979, this music and arts festival has welcomed live performers and local artisans to share their handiwork with the community. “People from all over the state come,” Hagen says. “It has the Main Stage and the Community Stage where musicians play, and sometimes magicians and other entertainers. Several public schools serving North End students operate within the neighborhood. The centrally located Washington Elementary School welcomes 260 children from prekindergarten through sixth grade and has an A-minus from Niche. North Junior High School and Boise High School operate in the neighborhood’s southern section and have A ratings. Boise High has served the city for over 120 years and currently enrolls over 1,500 teens. Niche considers it the third-best public high school in Idaho.Quick bike commutes
Several bus stops appear in the neighborhood, especially along 9th and 15th streets in the eastern section. Valley Regional Transit provides hourly service to each stop. Most North End residents can quickly commute to downtown Boise on foot or via bicycle. “The reason my family moved to Boise and chose the North End is its proximity to downtown,” Hagen says. “In California, we spent hours on the freeway to and from work. We wanted to move somewhere where we could walk or ride our bike to work in less than 15 minutes.”
