A rural desert community centered around a historic mine in the Mojave Desert
Surrounded by thousands of acres of the Mojave Desert, the Boron-Desert Lake community is a prime example of a one-horse town, with a rural atmosphere, quiet streets and a small handful of local businesses where customers are known by name. Known and named for the minerals mined just north of town, Boron is home to the largest source of boric acid in the world. Many of the area’s residents are employed by the mine, and when entering the town limits, visitors are met with a sign welcoming them to the home of Borax. The community is proud of its history and small-town atmosphere, with the 20 Mule Team Museum serving as a focal point of the community. “Boron has a really close-knit community,” says Kenny Cantarero, a local real estate agent with New Paradigms Realty. “It’s the kind of place where you walk into the community market or the cafe and they know your name.”
Modest single-story homes with attractive price tags in Boron
Modest ranch-style and manufactured homes line the streets of both Boron and Desert Lake, a small subdivision roughly 3 miles east of town. Most houses sit close together on quarter and half-acre lots. “Most of the clients that I work with in Boron and Desert Lake are attracted to the area by its affordability,” Cantarero says. “It’s popular among first-time homebuyers for that reason.” Prices range from $180,000 to $285,000, while fixer-uppers can go for $60,000 to $120,000. Paved, walkable roads connect residents to Historic Old Town, with pine, palm and mesquite trees dotting front yards.
After-school programs and adult learning with the Murdoc Joint Unified School District
West Boron Elementary School lies on the west side of town in Desert Lake and earns a C overall grade from Niche. The school serves prekindergarten through sixth-grade students and offers after-school programs and a summer explorers program. Boron Junior-Senior High School receives a C-plus. The Muroc Joint Unified School District also hosts an adult learning course on welding after school hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Boron Branch Library hosts regular community events, from craft nights and story times to Dungeons & Dragons workshops for local teenagers.
Authentic Mexican food and quaint commercial district
Twenty Mule Team Road serves as Boron’s business district, with eateries, a clothing store, a hardware store and the 20 Mule Team Museum. The 20 Mule Cafe serves classic diner fare from omelets and French toast to burgers and burritos. B-Town Donuts offers a variety of baked goods, coffee and breakfast burritos, while Barel serves window-service tacos, burgers and hot dogs. The area is also home to a handful of spots with authentic Mexican cuisine, including Domingo’s and Rincón Latino Cafe. Shoppers can pick up the essentials at Boron Food Mart and Family Dollar or drive around 40 miles east to Barstow for a bigger selection.
Sports facilities and hiking trails near Boron-Deesert Lake
Boron Park lies on the community’s south side and has baseball diamonds, a picnic shelter, a playground, horseshoe pits and a skate park. Red Rock Canyon State Park is around 45 miles northeast and has dozens of campsites and miles of trails popular among hikers and horseback riders. Boron is also within 200 miles of Death Valley, Joshua Tree and Sequoia national parks.
Take Highway 395 or Route 58 to nearby towns
