Ashmont’s suburban feel with access to Greater Boston amenities
A segment of Dorchester, Boston’s largest and most diverse neighborhood, Ashmont attracts residents with its elegant architecture and prime location. The main artery of activity is Dorchester Avenue, which runs right through the middle of the neighborhood, featuring a transit station, restaurants and shops. The rest of the area is mostly residential space, with the occasional library or service building thrown into the mix. Children here fall in the Boston Public Schools district, so families have school choice of elementary, middle and high pipelines. Ashmont also has various places of worship within about 3 miles, including Christian churches, the Masjid Ar-Rahman and Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills. The neighborhood has a distinguished suburban feel, with its exquisite late 1800s and early 1900s homes. Nevertheless, with downtown just 7 miles away, the community maintains proximity to a range of modern, urban amenities.
Striking homes on sizeable lots in Ashmont
Dorchester is a large area with many housing options, and Ashmont has a slew of desirable choices. “I think you find the most spectacular homes in the area right in Ashmont,” says Realtor Kerry Dowlin of Coldwell Banker Realty, who has lived in Dorchester since 2000. These standout houses are predominantly crafted with Victorian or colonial styling, with porches, balconies and intricate detailing. Single-family homes often sell between $800,000 and $2 million. There are some properties in Ashmont that are organized as multi-family residences, including three-family properties known as triple-deckers. The triple-deckers were originally designed to house large families, but some have been converted into condos, with each floor rented individually, starting around $2,000 per month. Also, houses in Ashmont typically have their own lawn space, with lots ranging from about 5,000 to 10,000 square feet, which is bigger than most throughout the city. “You can really spread out and breathe in a neighborhood like Ashmont,” Dowlin says. Apartments are also available near Ashmont Station in The Carruth and Treadmark buildings, which contain dozens of residential units near the neighborhood’s main retail and shopping space.
Ashmont’s small shopping and dining clusters
Adam Street and Dorchester Avenue, especially near Ashmont Station, have a batch of dining and small shopping options. One of the area’s standout restaurants is Tavolo Ristorante, where customers can enjoy Italian fare in a comfortable, casual atmosphere. Another popular spot is Lucy’s American Tavern, east of Dorchester Avenue, just off of Gallivan Boulevard. Lucy’s offers brunch, lunch and dinner menus and is filled with TVs, popular among sports fans for catching a game. Ripple Café has a location in Ashmont and serves up caffeine, pastries and toasts. Local stores include Ashmont Cycles, which is a full-service bike shop, and The Local Hand is a perfect place to see an art show or pick up a gift that supports neighborhood artisans. The Local Hand also has seasonal crafting events, such as pumpkin painting in the fall. While Ashmont Convenience Store is available for a quick errand, big-box stores are also nearby, including Star Market, Price Rite, Target and Stop & Shop, all within 1 or 2 miles.
Getting outside and active in Ashmont
Dorchester Park, just south of Ashmont, is a wooded expanse that has been around since 1891. It features athletic field space, tennis courts, walking paths and a playground. Dorchester Park was designed by notable landscape architect Frederick Law?Olmsted, who designed multiple Boston parks, along with New York City’s Central Park. This park also borders the major Carney Hospital medical center. Peabody Square is a small space with seating, surrounded by striking architecture, art and street clocks off Dorchester Avenue. The Dorchester YMCA is located in Ashmont for another recreation option, which Dowlin says is quite popular. The facility offers a gym, pool, exercise classes and a range of programs for children.
Special community events in Ashmont
Dorchester Avenue is home to the Ashmont Farmers Market, which takes place outside of the transit station from July through October. The Dorchester Day Parade, which happens on the first Sunday of each June, has flourished for more than 116 years and features local marching bands and other civic groups tracing up Dorchester Avenue. Dorchester Park also hosts events throughout the year, including car shows, concerts and races.
Public education options in Ashmont
Kids in Ashmont can attend Boston Public Schools, starting at Thomas J. Kenny Elementary for kindergarten through Grade 6, which earns a C-plus grade from Niche. Students could also head to Dr. William W. Henderson Inclusion School, rated C-plus, which enrolls children from kindergarten through Grade 12. The average class size at Henderson is about 22, giving students the opportunity to have more one-on-one collaboration with teachers, and it is the only Boston Public School that offers a comprehensive curriculum for children of all learning abilities. Boston International High School is another option nearby and scores a B-minus. Dowlin says that Ashmont and Dorchester residents prioritize education and have “made a real commitment to improving the local schools.” For example, Thomas J. Kenny Elementary has had over 150 improvement projects funded by DonorsChoose.
Transportation options in Ashmont
Ashmont’s Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (The T) subway station is situated along the Red Line, which can take riders as far north as Cambridge and as far south as Braintree. The station is one of the big draws of Ashmont that brings in a lot of commuters. Ashmont is also under 2 miles away from Interstate 93, for those who prefer to drive. Air travel is available about 9 miles away, which equates to about a 20-minute drive, at Boston Logan International Airport.
