Condos in iconic mid-rises and triple-decker buildings
Brick condominium mid-rises dot the neighborhood. “You’ll see many larger brick buildings that are prewar mid-rises; these buildings are massive and have many units on a single level,” Foley says. Condo units start around $300,000 for a 400-square-foot studio, and may go up to $800,000 for a two-bedroom. “Compared to nearby Boston neighborhoods, the Brighton-Allston area in general is a cheaper place to live,” says Franklin Knotts, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker Realty – Boston with 37 years of experience. “Cleveland Circle is cool because people can walk and jog around the reservoir, and you’ll see more multi-family there.” Around Cleveland Circle, units that offer views of the Chestnut Hill Reservoir can fetch between $1 million and over $2 million. One-bedrooms in multi-unit Queen Annes and New England-style houses are around $500,000, while multi-family houses usually go over $1.5 million.Restaurants around Packard's Corner
Lively restaurants and bars define the Commonwealth community. Packard’s Corner is home to a variety of restaurants, including Kaju Korean, Shabu-Zen for hotpot and Garlic & Lemons for Mediterranean fare. Over in the west end by Cleveland Circle and BC, Café Landwer serves casual brunch favorites, and Cityside Tavern is a neighborhood spot for catching a game. Nightlife options include Habibi’s Lounge, Hopewell Bar & Kitchen and the Avenue Bar Allston, all of which are along Comm Ave. In addition to Star Market, Whole Foods Market and Target, people can also shop for fresh local produce at Brighton’s farmers market, which is open year-round on Sundays.Commuter rail and T stations around Commonwealth
Commonwealth is home to several T and commuter rail stations, including Harvard Avenue, Cleveland Circle and South Street. “There are many T stops along Comm Ave, so college students like it here as they can just hop on and off along the subway and get to school,” Knotts says. The Green Line, operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, runs through the community, providing people with access to BU and downtown Boston. The Framingham/Worcester commuter rail line also stops in the area, which lets people ride from Fenway all the way to Worcester. The neighborhood also has bus stops, and many people opt for biking as an alternative. St. Elizabeth's Medical Center is right by Cleveland Circle, while downtown Boston and Boston Logan International Airport are about 6.5 miles and 9 miles east via Interstate 90, respectively.Major events around Comm Ave
Local libraries such as the Brighton Branch and the Honan-Allston Branch of the Boston Public Library organize many community events and workshops, including story time and singalongs for children, as well as painting and craft classes. Other celebrations include the annual food fair Taste of Allston and the Allston Village Street Fair Festival. People can go see a concert at one of the area’s music venues, such as Brighton Music Hall. The Greenline Rivalry, also known as the Battle of Comm Ave, refers to the century-long sports competition between BC and BU. College students and recent alums go all out with pre-game celebrations during ice hockey and soccer season to support their schools. Another city-wide tradition is the Boston Marathon, which is also the longest-running marathon in the world. Every year about 500,000 spectators come to the city to witness over 25,000 participants finish the race.Parks around Brighton and Cleveland Circle
Residents who live around Cleveland Circle can bike or jog along Chestnut Hill Reservation’s looped trail or fish at the reservoir. The reservation is also home to the Riley Rink and Pool, tennis courts and an expansive multi-purpose field for soccer and softball. Closer to Packard’s Corner, Ringer Park offers similar amenities such as a playground, tennis courts and a ball field. Smaller parks such as Fidelis Park and Jean B. Waldstein Playground are spread throughout the community, giving people a chance to enjoy green space and fresh air right within the city.Boston Public Schools
Boston Public Schools is enrolled in the school choice program, which gives students more schooling options. Students may begin at F. Lyman Winship Elementary School, which offers a rigorous STEAM pathway and scores a B-plus from Niche. Thomas A. Edison Elementary, also known as Edison K8 School, provides arts-focused programs and courses in coding and robotics. Brighton High School offers career academies in media and communications, engineering and the health profession. Both schools have a C rating.
