Residential area with a retail mix

The village of Newton Highlands has custom contemporary homes, a small downtown district and several Green Line T stops. Renovated 19th-century Victorian structures and brand-new modern houses sit behind front lawn gardens with overgrown bushes. A paved multipurpose trail exists for walking and biking. A walkable shopping district features boutiques and Mediterranean eateries operating from the first floor of 1800s rowhouses. Newton Highlands is an idyllic New England suburban neighborhood 10 minutes outside downtown Boston. “Newton is a great town to live in,” says Ryan McCormick, manager at Metro Realty Corp. in nearby Brookline. “It’s very family-oriented with good schools. That’s a lot of the appeal. It’s also close to the city and more affordable than Brookline.”

Vibrant downtown district

Newton Highlands’ commercial district sits along Lincoln Street, lined with brick and concrete sidewalks and street parking. Burritos and bowls are served at Anna’s Taqueria, a taco restaurant with locations in and around Boston. People get their hair done at the village salons, buy blazers and hand lotions at its boutiques and end the day with a cocktail at Buttonwood or a pizza from 57 Lincoln Kitchen. With its brick exterior, long glass panel windows and wooden bar, O’Hara’s Food & Spirits looks like a British pub. It’s an Irish bar serving steak, mashed potatoes and freshly poured Guinness.

Gorgeous homes with Victorian and Tudor touches

Locals near the district can walk there from their renovated colonials or Federal-style homes along paved sidewalks. Streetscapes in Newton Highlands are the epitome of New England suburbia, with their Victorian, shingled and contemporary architecture, overgrown leafy trees and floral bushes and paved roadways that look kept, but not in a cookie-cutter way. Newton Highlands is what new neighborhoods across the U.S. hope they’ll grow up to be. A brand-new modern home with Tudor touches can cost $4.4 million, Victorian multifamily structures can cost $2.5 million and 19th-century homes with Italianate touches can go for $1.5 million. Prices range from $879,000 to more than $4 million. “It has easy access to the highway. You can get on and off the Pike pretty easily,” says McCormick.

I lived in Newton Highlands for a couple of years and found it to be a very calm and safe neighborhood. One of my favorite places is definitely Hemlock Gorge; there is always something new to find there!
