South Boston, colloquially known as "Southie," is a bustling neighborhood that features popular local restaurants, sandy beaches and historic landmarks. "The area has seen a lot of development," says Andrew McKinney, a Realtor at Donnelly + Co. with over 15 years of experience. "It has changed a lot." The area retains its Irish roots while still being a popular urban spot with a beach town alias. Residents can visit downtown Boston 3 miles away to enjoy some of the many annual events or shop at the local malls. Many residents walk along the paved sidewalks to get to nearby restaurants since street parking can be limited. New condos continue to pop up as more people move to Southie.
High-end condos with Old Harbor views
McKinney notes that Southie homes can come in a variety of styles, including midrise multi-family buildings, single-family properties and triple-deckers converted into condominiums. Most feature Italianate-inspired and contemporary designs. A three-bedroom townhouse built in the 1900s that could use some exterior repairs can sell for $550,000. A block away from East Broadway, contemporary condominium buildings often sell for $1.5 million, and high-end waterfront condos go for $3 million or more. There are opportunities for homeowners, renters and property managers in South Boston. "It's getting more popular all the time," says McKinney. "And I'm not at all surprised."

Homes in Southie fall in the Boston Public School, the largest district in Massachusetts. Parents send their kids to Joseph P. Tynan Elementary School, which gets a C from Niche. The James F. Condon School offers kindergarten through eighth grade and features a full-sized gym and pool where kids can get swim lessons starting in the second grade. Niche gives Condon a C. The college preparatory school Excel High gets a C-plus and organizes internships with the Federal Reserve Bank and Vertex Pharmaceuticals. Multiple charter and private Catholic schools are available in the area as well.
Relaxing at Pleasure Bay or the Medal of Honor Park
When the weather warms, locals flock to Castle Island, a coastal spot that is part park and part historic area. Visitors can explore Fort Independence—a fort used as an armory during multiple different wars—or sunbathe and swim at Pleasure Bay. If locals want a little exercise, they stroll on the paved roads at Head Island. "This part of the neighborhood is very popular," McKinney says. Athletes young and old visit Evans Field to play baseball or practice their serve on the tennis court. Parents take their kids for a fun day on the playground at Medal of Honor Park.
Pub crawls are a breeze in Southie
Along West Broadway, an area with plenty of restaurant options, guests enjoy a latte at Broadway's Pastry & Coffee or meet up with friends for tacos and margaritas at Loco Taqueria and Oyster Bar. Another popular spot, Lincoln Tavern and Restaurant, serves brunch, dinner and signature cocktails. Those looking for Irish-themed food and drinks can't miss out on a trip to Shamrock Pub. Also on West Broadway, residents pick up essentials at CVS and shop at the neighborhood farmers market from June through October to get natural and locally grown items. When the farmers market is closed, residents visit the Stop & Shop to get ingredients for a homemade dinner. Small shops like Luxe Leisure Boutique and Bohdii Boutique offer clothing options for those who want to avoid shopping at a busy mall in downtown Boston.

Bostonians know how to celebrate
Boston hosts different annual events throughout the year that draw in crowds of people from all around Massachusetts. Southie residents head into Boston for Harborfest in July and the Boston Marathon. Some visit SoWa Art + Design district on the first Friday of every month to see what local artists have put on display in the different art galleries. Locals stay in Southie to see the St. Patrick's Day parade, also known as one of the country's oldest and biggest St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
Fly, drive or ride around South Boston
Only two miles from the South Station train terminal, Boston's busiest transit hub, Southie residents have no problem accessing other parts of the city and beyond via local and regional transit connections. The Boston Logan International Airport sits 3 miles away, giving residents easy access to the airport when they need to fly locally or across the sea. Being so close to the airport can get noisy when planes fly overhead. Residents have to park on the street, so drivers keep their eyes peeled for pedestrians who might walk out from between the cars and other drivers coming and going.

The violence in the neighborhood bad, I can't let my children out to play. People hang outside at night and I am scared to go home. The parking is terrible.
