The median sale price is around $1.2 million, which is above the citywide median but still slightly lower than the medians in nearby neighborhoods like Back Bay and Downtown Boston. Home sales are rare, and apartments are the most common housing style. “There are a lot of renters,” says Georgia Balafas, Boston native and associate broker with Corcoran Property Advisors. “It’s very popular with students as well.”
Walkable streets and transit options simplify local commutes
Parking is a notorious hassle in Boston, especially in downtown neighborhoods like this one. Most residents find that it’s easier to get around without a car. “Tufts Medical is right there, the clubs are right there, the nightlife is right there,” Balafas says. “You’re in the middle of everything, and you can walk everywhere.” Many downtown destinations are within a 10- to 15-minute walk, and you should be able to walk to the Common in even less time. Public transit is readily accessible as well, with several T stations within walking distance and MBTA bus routes providing additional coverage throughout the city. Dedicated bike lanes and nearby Bluebikes sharing stations cater to cyclists. If you do decide to drive, you can access interstates 90 and 93 just outside the neighborhood.

Between the heavy traffic and live music venues, the Theatre District is one of Boston’s livelier — and louder — areas. Late at night, pedestrian and car traffic intensifies as crowds flood out of the theaters and clubs, which drives up the volume even further. If you’re looking for a quieter neighborhood, you might consider checking out homes in Jamaica Plain or Fort Hill, which are farther from the city center, but still provide good access to public transit. As a bonus, home sale prices are generally lower in those areas.
