Thompson Square-Bunker Hill is steeped in Revolutionary history

Thompson Square-Bunker Hill sits in the heart of Charlestown, Boston’s oldest settlement. The Bunker Hill monument rises from the center of the neighborhood, commemorating one of the first major battles of the Revolutionary War. Once the tallest structure in Boston, the 221-foot landmark can be seen from many spots throughout the city. Local parks and green spaces frame the area's other Revolutionary War landmarks, and the residential streets are a patchwork of brick rowhouses and clapboard homes. Because the neighborhood is perched on a peninsula between the Charles and Mystic rivers, it’s convenient to Downtown Boston and the North End .

Thompson Square-Bunker Hill has many historic attractions

Residents find plenty of ways to keep busy on the weekends here. Aside from the Bunker Hill monument and nearby museum, local attractions include:

  • Paul Revere Park, a waterfront oasis with a modern playground and scenic city views
  • John Harvard Mall, a brick plaza with stone benches and mature shade trees
  • Charlestown Navy Yard, home of the “Old Ironsides” warship and a beer and wine garden
  • Winthrop Square, a popular resting place for Freedom Trail walkers
At the Charlestown Community Center, locals can work out at the fitness center, swim laps in the indoor pool and sign up for community enrichment courses.

The neighborhood mixes historic taverns with newer dining spots

Many local restaurants serve up a hearty dose of history alongside their food and beverage offerings, but newer restaurants are in the mix to keep things lively. You can grab a bite at these spots:

  • Warren Tavern, which dates to 1780 and serves satisfying pub grub in a Colonial-era atmosphere
  • Monument Restaurant & Tavern, a gastropub specializing in wood-fired pizza and creative twists on classic comfort food
  • Brewer’s Fork, where you can sample craft beer and cider along with pizza and savory small plates
  • Pier 6, a casual waterfront seafood spot with a roof deck
  • Prima, an upscale Italian steakhouse with an impressive wine list
You’ll find several of these restaurants along the walkable Main Street thoroughfare, which is a key corridor for the neighborhood’s shopping and dining scene. The Bunker Hill Mall shopping center has a Whole Foods Market for groceries, plus a CVS drugstore and Charlestown Ace Hardware. Joy Street sells kids’ clothes, books and toys, and fresh flowers and household plants are available at Junebug.

A walkable neighborhood with public transit access, including a ferry

According to Martha Toti, a senior sales associate with Coldwell Banker, the neighborhood is a “big walking community” for both recreation and commuting. “You can walk to the North End very easily,” adds Toti, who’s been serving the community for over 13 years. As for public transit, the nearby Community College T station serves the Orange Line, and MBTA bus stops are scattered throughout the area. The Lechmere station is also close by for Green Line access, and the Charlestown Ferry runs from the Navy Yard to Long Wharf in Downtown Boston. While you don’t need a car to get around, some properties provide on- or off-street parking, and U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 93 both run through the neighborhood. The drive downtown can take 10 minutes in light traffic; however, city parking is notoriously challenging.

What to know about the Boston Public Schools assignment system

Students can attend schools in the Boston Public Schools district, which relies on a home-based assignment system for prekindergarten through eighth grade. The Warren-Prescott School provides a highly rated option nearby. For high school, kids can apply to schools across the district. If they opt for Charlestown High, they can earn credits from Bunker Hill Community College — which is just outside the neighborhood — through the Early College Pathways program.

Thompson Square-Bunker Hill versus other historic neighborhoods

How does Thompson Square-Bunker Hill compare to other historic Boston neighborhoods? It depends on what you’re looking for. Across the harbor, the North End is teeming with iconic Italian eateries, and cultural celebrations fill the calendar. The median home sale price runs lower, too. However, it’s a lot more crowded over there. Cobblestone streets, brick-paved sidewalks and gaslit lanterns imbue Beacon Hill with old-world charm, and it’s a quieter and more residential neighborhood than the North End. But out of these three, it has the highest median home sale price.
