West Codman Hill-West Lowe offers lower cost of living near Boston
West Codman Hill-West Lowe is a Dorchester neighborhood that attracts those who want to live within Boston’s city limits without paying a premium price tag. “There’s a lot more employment potential in this area,” says Richard Phipps founder of CFS Realty and Management and Consumer Financial Services, who has sold numerous homes in the area. “Even for Uber drivers, it is much busier over here. There’s more opportunity living in the Dorchester area.” Plus, homes line quiet residential streets, there’s a range of dining options, two train stations are close and the neighborhood is near many of Boston’s most beloved parks.
Quiet suburban streets away from busy downtown Boston
The neighborhood offers a mix of single-family homes, townhouses and condos. About half of the residents are renters, while the other half own their homes. Residential roads are quiet and tree-lined; many areas resemble a nearby suburb more than the city of Boston itself. Single-family homes can cost from about $560,000 to $760,000, and bungalows, Colonial Revival, and Cape Cods are common. Condos and apartments are typically housed within Colonial-style buildings, Queen Annes or triple-deckers. Investors looking to purchase one of these properties can find one for between $815,000 and $1.8 million, while a unit inside one can cost about $660,000 to $900,000. “It’s a lot of people who work in the city and feel pressure to live in the city,” Phipps says. “Maybe they’ve just moved from nearby areas or want shorter commutes, but this way they can be in the city limits without being right in it.”
Nearby Franklin Park, Dorchester Park and Harambee Park
The neighborhood is near many of Dorchester’s most popular outdoor spaces. Franklin Park, Boston’s largest at over 500 acres, offers something for everyone. Families take trips to the zoo, high school sports teams compete under the lights at White Stadium, cultural performances take place at the Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park and golfers tee off at the William J. Devine Golf Course. Nearby Dorchester Park spans 30 acres. Here, mature oak trees shade paved walking paths, and visitors enjoy ball fields and tennis courts. Harambee Park is dedicated solely to sports and active recreation, with facilities for basketball, football, cricket, soccer and lacrosse. Recent improvements to the park brought new game and practice fields, enhanced pedestrian pathways and upgraded amenities.
Getting around West Codman Hill-West Lowe
West Codman Hill-West Lowe is walkable and near many transportation options that lead throughout the city. “Means of transportation are a draw to this area,” Phipps says. “There are very busy points of transport, and transportation is much easier over there generally.” Massachusetts state Route 203 cuts through the center of the community and connects to U.S. Interstate 93 to the east and Blue Hill Avenue to the west. The Morton Street rail station is just outside the neighborhood, leading throughout the city on the Fairmount, Franklin/Foxbury and Providence/Stoughton lines. The nearby Ashmont station offers Red Line service. The area is also served by many Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority buses. For air travel, the Boston Logan International Airport is about 11 miles north.
Shopping and dining mostly near Dorchester Avenue
Most of the neighborhood’s shopping and dining options are concentrated in its southern region. Locals will find a Star Market, CVS pharmacy and various restaurants in this area. Residents can dine along Dorchester Avenue, where quaint shops and eateries line brick sidewalks. The Bowery Bar dishes American fare and has a popular brunch menu, while Yellow Door Taqueria is a go-to for after-work tacos and margaritas. In the morning, Sweet Life and Flat Black Coffee are popular for lattes and breakfast sandwiches.
Students zoned for Boston Public Schools
Boston Public Schools serve West Codman Hill-West Lowe. Students can attend Joseph Lee K-8 School, which gets a C from Niche, before Jeremiah E. Burke High School, which earns a C-plus and offers dual enrollment with Brightpoint Community College.
