Rural living outside Houma
As Bayou Terrebonne slowly winds its way from Houma, it flows east through the small community of Bourg, a Louisiana town of 2,000. The town is part of the Houma-Bayou Cane-Thibodaux metropolitan area, although the word “metropolitan” doesn’t quite spring to mind on the drive along Louisiana Highway 24, which follows the bayou’s path through Bourg. “It’s very rustic — not your bougie or luxury destination,” says Tara Morvant, communications and public relations manager for Explore Houma. “You’re going to find locals that will give you the shirt off their back, especially during hurricane season. If you have to rebuild, your neighbors are going to be there to serve you food, help you build your house back, tarp your roof.” According to Kelli Guidry, broker associate with Real Broker, the rustic atmosphere is a major draw. “It’s a desirable area because it is that rural,” she says. “You get that small-town community feel.” Highly rated area schools are another plus for young families.

Bungalows, ranch homes and Cape Cods
Bourg rolls across over 5 square miles, and the houses don’t adhere to any specific architectural style. The drive alongside Bayou Terrebonne reveals modest bungalows flanking luxury brick homes with sprawling yards and decorative fencing. The housing landscape is just as varied on the residential streets branching off from the main thoroughfare. Some properties feature tidy lawns and paved driveways, while others sit on dead-end roads bordered by trees and tall grass. Older housing stock dates back to the 1960s, but many homes have been updated over the years, and others were built in the early 2000s. Four-bedroom bungalows or single-story brick contemporary builds cost between $200,000 and $300,000, while Cape Cod and ranch-style homes sell for $300,000 to $550,000.
Cape Cods can be found alongside ranches , all of which have spacious front yards.

A bright start at Bourg Elementary School
Centrally located Bourg Elementary School boasts a Niche grade of A-minus. Students travel about 7 miles south of town to Montegut Middle School. South Terrebonne High School lies about 5 miles in the other direction, toward Houma. The middle and high schools also receive A-minus grades from Niche.
Bourg Elementary School is one of the best in the area, and the reason many people move here.
South Terrebonne High School has a large football field, track and tennis courts.

Playing ball at Bourg Recreation District
The Bourg Recreation District occupies a tract of land off Eldred Street near Bourg Elementary School. A paved walking trail winds around an open grassy field, basketball and tennis courts, benches and a shaded picnic area. An indoor gymnasium doubles as an auditorium, and the playground just outside the building appeals to grade-school-aged kids. Anglers and paddlers can launch their watercraft into the canal from the Texas Gulf Boat Launch.

Hitting Highway 24 Seafood
Situated at the end of a long cul-de-sac, Louis Mohana Furniture offers curbside pickup and delivery for its indoor and outdoor furniture. A short ride down Country Drive leads to Bourg Supermarket, featuring weekly specials and a VIP rewards program. The small parking lot at nearby Klondyke Hardware could use patching up, but the store’s ample stock is convenient for homeowners who don’t want to drive into Houma. Crawfish is available for takeout at Highway 24 Seafood, a favorite with locals.
Highway 24 Seafood is the only locally owned restaurant in Bourg, famous for its shrimp.
Bourg Supermarket serves as the local grocery store.

Houma-Terrebonne Airport & Industrial Park
Ten miles of highway separate Bourg from Houma, the nearest taste of city life. While the drive is straightforward, the road name changes along the way: Highway 24 becomes Highway 659 (also known as Park Avenue) right around Houma-Terrebonne Airport & Industrial Park. Only charter flights are available from the small airstrip, so most folks make the 50-mile drive to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Also of interest: The Intracoastal Waterway, a 3,000-mile aquatic network spanning the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, runs along the northern edge of town.
Road to the Rougarou Fest
Every October, Bourg residents head 13 miles to Houma’s Rougarou Fest, a free, family-friendly event centered on the legend of the Rougarou, a werewolf-type creature rumored to roam the swamps in search of disobedient children. Live music, kids' stuff and Cajun food — plus an epic costume party — bring the three-day festival to life. In 2014, USA Today ranked it one of the Top 10 costume parties in the United States.
Bourg residents can attend the yearly Rougarou Festival in nearby Houma.

Hurricane season in the Bayou Region
Hurricane season runs from June through November, a real cause for concern in this part of Louisiana. Hurricane Ida ripped through the area in August 2021, and much of the region still hasn’t fully recovered. Rainfall is frequent throughout the year, contributing to the area’s extreme flood risk. But it’s a price most locals are willing to pay. “People are resilient here. Rather than relocate, they just keep building back because this place means so much to them,” Morvant says. “This is their home.”
