Waterside New England life on the fringes of Cape Cod
Between Buttermilk Bay and the Cape Cod Canal, Buzzards Bay is a slice of suburban and rural New England life. The Massachusetts neighborhood is on the mainland, just across the bridge from Cape Cod, and sits at the north end of its watery namesake. It also marks a rough midpoint between the state capital of Boston and Provincetown, which is at the far end of the peninsula. Archetypal homes, including older Cape Cods and waterfront properties, sit close to boundless recreation. Residents are a few minutes from launching boats into Buttermilk Bay; taking a walk, run or bike ride along the Cape Cod Canal Bikeway; or lying in the sun at Electric Avenue Beach. Massachusetts Routes 25 and 28 run past the neighborhood, connecting it with Interstate 495 to Boston, and state Route 6 links Buzzards Bay with the end of the Cape in the opposite direction.
Cape Cod Canal cruising and Buttermilk Bay boating
On one side of Buzzards Bay, the expanse of Buttermilk Bay is popular for aquatic activities. “Buttermilk Bay is a great place to boat,” says David Eldredge, broker and owner of Realty Solutions. “There are a lot of pontoon boats and you’ll see a lot of people cruising around there on a Sunday afternoon.” Locals frequently go to Electric Avenue Beach and swim, fish or boat in the bay. On the other side of Buzzards Bay, the Cape Cod Canal Bikeway runs for over 6 miles between the neighborhood and Cape Cod Bay. “A lot of people go there and walk the length of the canal, bike it or rollerblade it,” Eldredge says. “It’s a popular location for people to enjoy a nice day, enjoy the canal and watch the boats go by.” Other local outdoor activities include:
Hiking at Little Buttermilk Bay Woods
Camping at Bourne Scenic Park
Boating out of Buzzards Bay Marina
Paddling and fishing at Bourne Pond and Queen Sewell Pond
Classic Cape Cods convenient to the coast
Buzzards Bay mostly consists of single-family homes, typically with classic New England architecture like older Cape Cod and ranch-style designs. “It’s the old Cape village charm,” Eldredge, who has lived in the area for 40 years, says. “Those are predominantly what you’ll find in Buzzards Bay. There are some newer styles, such as split-entries, propped up here and there.” Single-family homes typically cost between around $430,000 and $650,000. Larger and custom homes, along with bayfront or canal-front properties, typically cost around $1 million. The neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 3 out of 10, below the national average of 4.
Main Street dining near the Cape Cod Canal
Most restaurants in Buzzards Bay are along Main Street near the canal. Mezza Luna has served Italian dishes for three generations next to Leo’s, a popular breakfast stop. “Mezza Luna draws a great crowd,” Eldredge says. “People come to Buzzards Bay just to go there.” Other stops along Main Street include burgers at Mahoney’s on Main, seafood at East Wind Lobster & Grille and seasonal ice cream at Seaside Scoops & Grille. Shoppers head to Wareham to browse shelves at Stop & Shop. The Wareham Crossing shopping center has stores like Target, Lowe’s and Old Navy. “I think a lot of people are drawn to Buzzards Bay because it’s close enough to everything but far enough away,” Eldredge says.
Bourne Public Schools provide education
Buzzards Bay is served by Bourne Public Schools. Kids begin at Bournedale Elementary School, moving to Bourne Intermediate School for grades three through five. Bourne Middle School and Bourne High School complete the pipeline. The Massachusetts Maritime Academy sits near Taylor Point in Buzzards Bay, enrolling around 1,500 students.
Residents can drive or take MBTA buses and trains
Massachusetts Route 25 arcs above Buzzards Bay before continuing south past Buzzards Bay as state Route 28. It becomes Interstate 495 about 7 miles west, where drivers can head to Boston about 60 miles from Buzzards Bay. Route 6, the Cape’s main artery, runs through Buzzards Bay and connects it with Provincetown about 70 miles east. MBTA Green Line buses have stops in the area and MBTA trains pick up passengers at the Buzzards Bay station. CCRTA CapeFlyer buses stop at the station between the Cape and Boston during the summer. Air travelers can take off from Boston Logan International Airport, around 60 miles away.
Music by the Cape Cod Canal and annual Bourne events
During the summer, Buzzards Bay Park has free concerts at a gazebo. “There are a lot of different shows,” Eldredge says. “The town and chamber of commerce do a good job of promoting the area, doing different things and events and using the gazebo area as the draw.” The Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce covers Bourne, Sandwich and Wareham. Along with the free Concerts by the Canal, it puts on events like Cape Cod Canal Day, which features a dog costume parade, 5k race and vendors; and the Annual Summer Spectacular, which serves as a fundraiser while featuring food, drinks and a raffle.
