Escaping the hustle and bustle in Alger

Alger is a rural community in Skagit County with wide-open grassy fields underneath the sun. Mild temperatures year-round keep Alger and the surrounding land green with vegetation, and neighbors connect with each other at the community center and a nearby car racing track. In the summertime, fresh produce, locally made honey and crafted goods like felt hats are sold at the weekly market. Alger sits directly east of Interstate 5, the major west coast highway, and is roughly 70 miles from both Seattle and Vancouver. The neighborhood’s CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, lower than the U.S. average of 4.

All about hiking and biking

The Pacific Northwest Trail connects Alger to Squires Lake Park just north of the neighborhood. The park provides 82 acres of outdoor recreation, including a lake full of cutthroat trout encircled by hiking and biking trails. “We are looking at trying to acquire some of the lake and negotiating with the Department of Natural Resources to get more bicycle trails,” says Brian Adams, Skagit County Director of Parks and Recreation. “Mountain biking is huge in this area, and we want to provide similar opportunities.” The Pacific Northwest Trail, which spans 1,200 miles, is a moderate hiking trail that ascends more than 1,000 feet, offering views of colorful foliage in the fall. Just south of Alger, Donovan County Park has a playground and tree-lined Friday Creek.

Access to Interstate 5

Alger’s social hubs

Though the neighborhood is spread out, folks come together at Alger Community Hall for events like Alger Improvement Club meetings and the Plant and Seed Swap. The Swap is a springtime celebration that features music, a chili cook-off and a Maypole Dance. On Sundays in the summertime, the Alger Sunday Market convenes at the Community Hall, selling locally-grown goods and crafts. The 65-member Alger Community Christian Reformed Church congregation gathers for Sunday services. “Going to Skagit Speedway is a popular activity and great for family time,” says Geri Cole, Realtor with Windermere Real Estate and Skagit County local. This car racing track has been drawing people to the area for 70 years. It’s the place to be on a Saturday night from April until September; the stadium accommodates up to 10,000 racing fans.

Playing pool at the neighborhood bar

Alger Bar & Grille is easy to find at Alger’s main intersection: it’s the only restaurant in the neighborhood. It entertains its exclusively 21-and-older crowd with billiards, darts, local beer on tap and family-size buckets of chicken. For more dining and shopping, residents can drive 12 miles south to Target, Fred Meyer and chain restaurants in Burlington.
