Houses built throughout the 1960s dot Chapel Forge’s cracked asphalt roads. Red-brick and beige vinyl split levels, cape Cod cottages and ranch styles often sit on quarter-acre lots. Houses usually have three to four bedrooms and attached garages, and many yards have white oak or magnolia trees. Prices tend to be similar to a Bowie home’s average $500,000 selling price. Buying here can cost between $450,000 and $550,000.Hiking at Whitemarsh Park or the Patuxent Research Refuge
Several green spaces surround Chapel Forge, including the 18-hole Bowie Golf Club, about 2 miles west. The city’s largest green space, 182-acre Whitemarsh Park, is 3 miles south. Hiking trails weave through oak forests and around sports facilities like baseball diamonds and the turf football field. Locals can watch plays and musicals at the Bowie Playhouse, located at the park’s core since 1976. Cooper says visiting the Patuxent Research Refuge, 9 miles northwest, is also popular. “It’s technically in Laurel, not Bowie, but it’s a massive piece of land,” she says. “People all across Prince George’s [County] drive up to hike there.” The refuge’s 25 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails stretch across hardwood forests, meadows and wetlands.B grades for Prince George’s County Public Schools

Baltimore is a 27-mile drive north via nearby Interstate 97. Cooper warns that driving to either city may take a while. “You’d think traffic to D.C. would be worse, but getting to Baltimore can take just as long during rush hour.” Depending on traffic, driving to either city can take 45 minutes to an hour. The neighborhood also has several Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority bus stops. A Maryland Area Regional Commuter train station is less than 3 miles north at Bowie State University.
