Turn-of-the-century charm in Old Bowie
As the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad expanded through Prince George’s County in the late 1800s, Bowie’s train station was built in the city’s first neighborhood, now known as Old Bowie. Today, the railroad is used by Maryland Area Rail Commuter trains, which locals can access at nearby Bowie State University. The original train station was preserved and turned into the Bowie Railroad Station Museum, and this history is the neighborhood’s appeal. “There’s a turn-of-the-century charm in Old Bowie that you can’t find anywhere else in the city,” says Larry Hudson, a sales associate with Blackwell Real Estate and a Bowie resident since 1997. Though the area doesn’t have much besides century-old houses, vibrant green spaces and the museum, Hudson adds that the Old Town Bowie Revitalization Project is underway. “It’s going to add more locally owned stores and restaurants, so buying in Old Bowie is like investing in the city's future.”

Century-old houses may need renovations
Bungalows dating back to the 1930s dot Old Bowie’s asphalt roads, often shaded by sycamore and oak trees. Hudson says many of these homes require updates. “A lot of them still have boilers for water and heating; that’s how old they are. If you’re buying in Old Bowie, be prepared to renovate.” Ranch styles and bi-level houses from the ‘60s and New Traditional houses built during the ‘80s are also common. Houses typically have two to four bedrooms and garages or private driveways. Buying here can cost between $340,000 and $420,000. That price range is similar to the national median.

Locals can watch MARC trains pass by at the Bowie Railroad Station Museum
Self-guided tours are available Friday through Sunday at the Bowie Railroad Station Museum, filled with engine parts from the early 20th century and model trains. Visitors can walk through an authentic B&O Railroad caboose outside, and the station’s original passenger shed is still intact. “My granddaughter and I will sit under [the shed] and watch as the MARC train passes by. It’s one of our little traditions,” Hudson says. Across the street, playhouses made to look like historic Bowie buildings, like the one-room schoolhouse and the fire station, cover Bowie Heritage Park. The green space is also the start of the Bowie Heritage Trail, a 900-foot-long pedestrian path stretching underneath the MARC tracks. Though it’s still open, the trail is currently undergoing construction as it expands toward Bowie State University. The project is expected to be complete by the fall of 2025.
Other recreation spaces in the area include Huntington South Park, where locals can shoot hoops on the basketball court, play tennis and run around the playground. The Huntington Community Center, located in a Federal Revival-style building, regularly hosts line dancing classes, youth theater groups and craft workshops. An American flag waves over Veterans Memorial Park, home to benches and stone plaques etched with the names of Bowie locals who served in the military. The triangle-shaped green space regularly hosts award ceremonies and veteran remembrance days. A few houses of worship are in the area, including the Ascension Catholic Church on Lanham Severn Road. Though the parish has been around since the late 1800s, the current Gothic Revival-style building was built in 1986.

Kids can attend Rockledge Elementary, graded a C by Niche. They may continue to Samuel Ogle Middle and Bowie High, both earning B minuses. The high school’s Bowie Bulldogs athletic program includes wrestling, tennis and swimming. Bowie State University, less than 2 miles northeast, is an HBCU with over 20 undergraduate majors, like biology and business. Despite this proximity, Hudson says students don’t typically live in the area. “There’s not a rental market in Old Bowie. Students predominantly live in the apartment complexes closer to campus.”

MARC trains lead to Baltimore and D.C.
The Bowie State University MARC station is along the Penn-Washington Line, typically reaching D.C. and Baltimore in under 45 minutes. The line runs through Old Bowie’s core, and locals may hear trains whistling. “If train noise is going to bother you, don’t move to Old Bowie,” Hudson says. He adds that the trains don’t run all night. “The last one is typically around 10 p.m., so nobody really loses sleep because of it.” Metro bus stops in the area offer rides to Bowie State University. D.C. is a less than 19-mile drive southwest on state Route 295, locally known as Baltimore-Washington Parkway. A 27-mile drive north on the same highway reaches Baltimore. Depending on traffic, the drive to either city can take one to two hours. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport are both about 20 miles away. The University of Maryland Bowie Health Center, 6 miles south, is the closest hospital.
The Old Town Bowie Revitalization Project is expected to start soon
Old Bowie is home to a few industrial warehouses, car repair shops and some stand-alone storefronts, like Christopher’s Antiques and The Pink Orchid, a florist. The revitalization effort plans to add art galleries, breweries and a performing arts venue to the area. Though the project hasn’t started yet, Hudson is hopeful it will begin this year. “People have been trying to get Old Bowie turned into a proper downtown for decades,” he says. “The city got funding in 2024, so construction for all these places should start at some point [in 2025.]” Old Bowie is in a Limited Supermarket Access area, with the nearest grocery stores, like Lidl and Giant, about 3 miles southwest. Bowie Town Center, 6 miles south, is an outdoor mall with over 70 stores, like Macy’s, Barnes & Noble and Foot Locker.
