Saddlebrook West is a hub for commuters in Bowie

Saddlebrook West sits next to the former Bowie Race Track, an equestrian center with a long history of Thoroughbred horse racing. While the facility no longer hosts horses, Bowie’s equestrian legacy lives on in the neighborhood with street names like Running Horse Place and Race Horse Lane. There are plans to transform the race track into a recreational space with athletic facilities, picnic areas and an urban farm, all of which will be within walking distance of Saddlebrook West. Residents also have access to the neighborhood’s amenities, including a community pool and walking paths leading to the Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Trail. The neighborhood is part of the “new Bowie,” an area of the city with more modern homes and higher prices than the Levitt portion of Bowie, which was built in the 1950s and ‘60s. “Bowie is a huge city, but the biggest thing I’ve noticed about this neighborhood in particular is that no one leaves,” says Kevin Conto, a Realtor with Redfin and Maryland native. “It’s just a beautiful community, and you definitely have the ability to find nicer homes for less money than in Washington or the D.C. suburbs.” With suburban amenities and comparative affordability in the DMV area, Saddlebrook West is a popular spot for commuters working in Washington, D.C., Annapolis and Baltimore – all 30 miles or less from Bowie.

New Traditional homes rarely come on the market

With New Traditional homes built throughout the early 2000s, Saddlebrook West is one of Bowie’s younger neighborhoods. Its homes embrace a relatively uniform look, with brick fronts and elements of Colonial Revival design. Driveways and attached garages keep the streets clear, and most properties have quarter or half-acre lots with lush landscaping. With a low turnover rate, homes rarely come on the market in Saddlebrook West. Just one home was sold within the past year, and properties have an average estimated value of around $760,000. When houses are available, they sell after an average of 151 days on the market, significantly longer than the national average. The Saddlebrook West HOA manages the community and requires residents to pay monthly dues of $75. The neighborhood’s overall CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

The counties expect to complete the project in the spring of 2025. The Bowie Golf Club is about 3 miles from the neighborhood, and its public 18-hole course is open year-round. They’ve integrated all those shopping and town centers into the community, so you have everything at your fingertips and don’t have to go anywhere else,” Conto says. Shopping plazas include the Bowie Marketplace, which has Harris Teeter and fast-casual restaurants such as MOD Pizza and Naz’s Halal Food. The city’s largest retail destination is the Bowie Town Center, an open-air mall with more than 70 stores.
