Cape Cods, Colonials and ranch-style homes built in the 1960s
Whitehall was once on the grounds of the Belair Mansion, a plantation house that operated on 500 acres in the 1700s and 1800s. The nearby mansion remains, and is now open to the public, though most of the original land is now subdivisions like this one. Whitehall has Colonial Revival, Cape Cod and ranch-style homes. Properties here typically sell for between $400,000 and $550,000. Homes with original floor plans range from about 1,400 square feet for standard Cape Cods to 2,400 square feet for the larger “Country Clubber” model. “The uniqueness of the homes, for me, is what makes them so popular,” Andrews says. One popular feature is the eight-foot sliding patio doors on most of the houses, which allow homeowners to easily add additions to the back of the home. “Anyone could build an addition; they put the interface there,” Andrews says. “People don’t have that today.”Several major green spaces surround Whitehall
The Whitehall Pool and Tennis Club has recreation within the neighborhood. The club has dive and swim teams, water aerobics, yoga classes on the tennis courts and more activities for locals. The club also hosts events like a community yard sale and an annual pickleball tournament. Golfers take their swing among the rolling, tree-lined hills of Bowie Golf Club, a public, 18-hole course bordering Whitehall. There are several other major Bowie parks also nearby. Among them is Whitemarsh Park, a 182-acre outdoor space with trails and athletic facilities 5 miles from the neighborhood. The old Bowie Race Track, once a horse racing venue, is just outside Whitehall. The grounds were acquired by the city in 2024, with plans to convert the facility into a public park. “They want to make it a big, green open area with a baseball diamond and soccer field,” Andrews says. “Right now, it’s still fenced off.”Prince George’s County Public Schools and Bowie State University
Younger students living in Whitehall typically begin at Whitehall Elementary School, which has a B grade from Niche, and Samuel Ogle Middle School, which has a B-minus grade. Both schools are within walking distance of the neighborhood. Bowie High School has an overall B-minus grade. High schoolers can apply for the Summit Scholars program within the school, a rigorous college-prep program that requires students to take Advanced Placement and Pre-AP courses. Bowie State University is 2 miles north of Whitehall. This historically Black institution has about 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students and continues to grow. “They’ve done a lot of construction of Bowie State over the last five to seven years, with lots of new buildings,” Andrews says.Riding the MARC train or driving to D.C.
Bowie is centrally located between several major cities. The neighborhood is 20 miles northeast of Washington, D.C., 30 miles south of Baltimore and 20 miles west of Annapolis. Bowie has two Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) train stations, Seabrook Station and Bowie State Station, that take commuters into D.C. Drivers can also take US-50 into D.C. from Bowie. Fort Meade, the center of the Department of Defense’s intelligence and information operations, is about 16 miles north. “A high percentage commute to D.C., but people commute all over,” Andrews says. “There is a tremendous amount of contractors that support [Fort Meade].” The closest major airports include Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, 24 miles southwest, and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, 22 miles northeast.Essential services and restaurants at Bowie Plaza and Bowie Town Center
Bowie Plaza is a small shopping center bordering the neighborhood on the west. The plaza has a Dollar General, gym, bank and a handful of restaurants, including D&G Caribbean Grill and Bar, which serves Jamaican dishes such as jerk chicken and oxtail. Giant Food and Harris Teeter are nearby off Annapolis Road, and Bowie Town Center, 4 miles south, has major retailers like Macy’s and Barnes & Noble. For nearby medical care, the UM Bowie Health Center has an emergency room just down the street from Bowie Town Center.
