A small Bowie neighborhood that offers commuter ease

With only shady sidewalks, midcentury houses and a namesake elementary school, Yorktown is a community that’s removed from Bowie’s busy commuter routes. However, major cities like Washington, D.C., and Baltimore are still less than 30 miles from this quiet neighborhood. “One of the best things about Bowie is that it can take about the same time to get to D.C. and Baltimore if you leave at the right time. People who live here commute to either city,” says Maria Hairston-Purcell, a broker with Prime Resource Realty and Property Management who has sold several homes in the area. Yorktown is also near essential commercial corridors, like Bowie Town Center, and some of the city’s liveliest green spaces, like Whitemarsh Park.

Midcentury homes in Yorktown

Houses built throughout the 1960s sit along Yorktown’s winding, sidewalk-lined roads, often shaded by mature white oak trees. Bi-level houses, ranch styles and Cape Cod cottages are all common here. They typically have three to four bedrooms and two-car garages. Prices tend to be similar to Bowie’s average $500,000 selling price. Buying here can cost between $400,000 and $550,000.

Hiking, sports and theater at nearby Whitemarsh Park

When locals aren’t playing on the elementary school or middle school playgrounds, they can drive about 3 miles south to visit Whitemarsh Park, the largest green space in Bowie. Walking trails surround sports facilities like the turf football field and the lighted baseball diamonds. Whitemarsh's sports-themed playground has a helmet-shaped slide and a lacrosse stick climbing wall. Two production groups regularly host plays and musicals at the Bowie Playhouse, also located in the park. Past productions include “Hairspray!” and “Dracula.” Yorktown is also near several other green spaces. Once part of an 18th-century horse farm, the Bowie Golf Club, 2 miles west, is now an 18-hole public course. Locals will find 13,000 acres of hunting, fishing and hiking land at the Patuxent Research Refuge, 9 miles north. Several Chesapeake Bay beaches, including Sandy Point State Park, are less than 30 miles east.

Yorktown Elementary and Samuel Ogle Middle are within walking distance

Children can attend Yorktown Elementary, Samuel Ogle Middle and Bowie High, all of which earn B-minus grades from Niche. The elementary school is in the western part of the neighborhood, and the middle school is less than a mile northwest, putting both schools within Prince George’s County Public Schools walking zones. Bowie High School, 2 miles southwest, offers specialty programs like construction design management and teaching. Bowie State University, less than 3 miles north, is a historically black university offering over 20 undergraduate majors, like business administration and criminal justice.

Reach D.C. and Baltimore by car or train

Though children can walk to school, Yorktown is a car-dependent community. Route 50 is about a 4-mile drive south of the neighborhood, and D.C. is another 18-mile drive west on the highway. Baltimore is a 27-mile drive north on Maryland Route 3 and Route 197. Hairston-Purcell warns that traffic to D.C. is often worse than traffic to Baltimore. “It can take people from Bowie up to 2 hours to get to D.C. during peak rush hour, but driving to Baltimore rarely takes over an hour and a half,” she says. A few Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority bus stops are along Race Track Road on the neighborhood’s western border, and a Maryland Area Regional Commuter train station is at Bowie State University. The station follows the Penn Line, reaching D.C. in about a half hour and Baltimore in about 45 minutes.

The University of Maryland Bowie Health Center is 4 miles south, and the Ronald Reagan National Airport is 26 miles west.

Shopping on Annapolis Road and at Bowie Town Center

Several strip malls line Annapolis Road, less than a mile south. Locals can grab groceries from Giant or Harris Teeter, shop at stores like Petco and T.J. Maxx and pick up food from chains like Starbucks and Chick-fil-A. But even with these nearby conveniences, Hairston-Purcell says Bowie Town Center, 4 miles south, is the most popular shopping center in town. “When you compare it to all the dead malls in Prince George’s County, [Bowie Town Center] actually has a lot going on.” Over 70 stores, including Macy’s, Barnes & Noble and Foot Locker, fill the outdoor mall.
