A break from busier Greater Boston neighborhoods
A small town about 35 miles northwest of Boston and adjacent to Acton, Boxborough attracts homebuyers looking to escape the city and enjoy a quiet, slow-paced lifestyle. With vast plots of land and Massachusetts Avenue’s string of businesses, residents can experience a sense of seclusion while also feeling part of a close community. Safety is a big draw to the area, as Boxborough’s CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10 remains significantly lower than the national average of 4. Niche gives public education in the Acton-Boxborough Regional School District an A-plus, notably for its college prep and athletic programs. Boxborough offers an escape from the noise and activity of the city without sacrificing convenience. “We have almost everything we need right here,” says Realtor Emeritus and Acton local, Joan Meyer with Barrett Sotheby’s International Realty. “And it’s such a sweet little town.”

Year-long outdoor and indoor recreation in Boxborough
Surrounded by conservation areas, plenty of outdoor adventures await. “The town has done a nice job of buying up land, so it won’t get developed,” Meyer says. Mountain bikers can head to Robinson Conservation Land, while Flerra Meadows offers dog-friendly walking trails, a playground and athletic fields. Popular among birdwatchers and cross-country skiers, the wetlands at Wolf Swamp serves as a habitat for a variety of wildlife, including some moose. Another local venue is Nashoba Valley Olympia, where Meyer says many local kids learn to skate. The ice rink holds skating lessons and youth hockey programs, along with open, public skating on Sundays.

Dining on Massachusetts Avenue and shopping in Acton or Littleton
Boxborough features a few restaurants off of Massachusetts Avenue, such as Oscar’s Burritos Mexican Grill, which has earned a spot on the Boston Globe Magazine’s list of places to eat West of Boston. Right down the road, Bravo Pizza serves a variety of hot subs, pasta dishes and, of course, specialty pies. Pony Shack Cider began in the owner’s two-car garage but now offers tastings at a brick and mortar shop off of Littlefield Road. Since Boxborough is a farm-friendly community, seasonal farm stands and produce markets are common, including Idylwilde Farms, which sits down the road from the seasonal Acton-Boxborough Farmers Market. Boxborough locals tend to head to the bordering towns of Littleton and Acton for groceries at Roche Bros., Stop & Shop and Market Basket, all within about 6 or 7 miles.

Spreading out on Boxborough properties
While Boxborough has a cluster of garden-style condominiums, a couple of townhouse units and a 55-plus community, the majority of the town’s housing stock consists of single-family homes on large lots. Some multiple-acre properties come with guest houses or horse farms in the back yard. Popular architectural styles include farmhouses, colonials, ranchers and Capes, often built in the 20th century. Single-family home prices tend to fall between $850,000 and over $1 million. One- and two-bedroom condos usually sell in the $200,000s. With the town’s general lack of sidewalks, residential streets are generally quiet and shaded by mature Massachusetts trees. Long driveways typically cut through sizeable front lawns and lead to private garages.
