Boyd is a growing rural community northwest of Fort Worth
Boyd is a rural bedroom community 30 miles outside of Fort Worth that has seen steady growth over the past few years. Much of the area reflects its mid-century agricultural roots, with lots of farms, ranches and livestock alongside the West Fork Trinity River. But this prairie town is also seeing lots of new construction, with more families moving to Boyd for its school district, local amenities and easy commutes into Cowtown.
Traditional and ranch-style homes of many sizes
Older homes can be found on city blocks near the former Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Farmhouses built in the early 1900s range from the mid-to-upper $100,000s. Traditional and ranch-style homes are most common, and there are some log cabins and larger homesteads with their own cattle barns and horse staples. Prices range from the mid-$300,000s to the upper $600,000s depending on lot sizes and square footage.
New master-planned communities under construction
There is also a lot of new builds throughout the area. Springhill South is a new master-planned development by D.R. Horton that offers one- and two-story houses with open floor plans and community amenities such as a pond, playground and resort-style pool. Single-family homes in Saddleback Estates sit on lush 1-acre lots, while large, custom-built residences are available in Highland Oaks. Prices range between the mid-$200,000s and upper $500,000s. “It’s growing a lot – especially on the outskirts,” says Yazmin Martinez, a local Realtor with Ready Real Estate with five years of experience. “They’re definitely busting at the seams.”
Career and technical education in Boyd ISD
The highly rated Boyd Independent School District is responsible for over 1,200 students across four campuses. Boyd Elementary has a preschool and teaches kindergarten through fourth grade. Boyd Intermediate & Middle School serve fifth- through eighth-grade students and are located in the same building. Boyd High School offers agriculture, business and health sciences courses through its career and technical education program and also offers dual credit in partnership with Weatherford College. Families pack into Yellow Jacket Stadium every Friday night in the fall to support their high school football team.
Local highways to Fort Worth and the DFW Airport
Texas State Highway 114 is the main road through town and merges with U.S. Route 287 about 5 miles east. From there, commuters can either stay on 114 to get to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport or merge with Interstate 35 West to drive toward Fort Worth. Medical City ER Haslet is less than 15 miles away and is open for 24 hours.
A few local restaurants and stores in Downtown Boyd
Many restaurants can be found along the main highway in the downtown area. A few of them include:
- Dos Chiles Grandes, a Mexican restaurant that’s been in business since 1998.
- GoGo Gumbo!, featuring New Orleans-style barbecue shrimp and crawfish etouffee.
- Mel’s Place, serving fresh hamburgers and fried catfish.
- Sam’s B-B-Q, which smokes its own beef brisket, hot links and pork ribs.
Residents shop for groceries at the local Lowe’s Market or for farming supplies at the Boyd Feed Store, a family-owned business that’s been serving the area for over 50 years. There are a few auto repair shops, tire stores and convenience stores around the area, as well as a few small boutiques and retailers. “Boyd has more businesses and more foot traffic,” Martinez says. “It’s the big-city life in a small rural area.”
Youth sports and dirt racing in Boyd
The Boyd Raceway is a quarter-mile dirt track that hosts several motorsports events throughout the year. “The new owners are actually revamping the track now,” Martinez says. “We have those monster trucks come out here, little derby cars – that’s really popular in Boyd.” James Snodgrass Park features a large playground with a basketball and pickleball court, a covered picnic pavilion and a walking loop around the park. The Boyd Youth Association also plays baseball on one of four fields at the R.T. Brooks Sports Complex.
