Newer homes in West Bozeman foster a growing suburban community

West Bozeman sits less than 4 miles from downtown Bozeman and is comprised of 21st- century subdivisions with custom homes. “It’s a nice neighborhood with parks, and everything is walkable,” says Pam McCutcheon, a real estate broker and owner of Small Dog Realty, who has over 25 years of experience and has lived in Bozeman for almost 40 years. “It’s a safe community and very friendly. Like in every other community, things are changing with the growth. They’re building apartments, and we have terrific stores coming where they revamped the mall.”

Subdivisions with 21st century homes

Most homes in West Bozeman are newer builds found along sidewalk-lined streets dotted with decorative trees. Properties are accompanied by small grassy lawns and the occasional privacy fence. Contemporary single-story homes built in the 2000s to 2010s are common. Most have Craftsman features like pointed roofs, front gables and a front porch, though some properties have a more traditional design. There are also multistory New Traditional homes and bi levels in the neighborhood, built from the 2010s to 2020s. Prices range from $575,000 to $950,000. “We’ve got a ton of inventory. It’s a great time to buy because there’s so much on the market,” McCutcheon says. A handful of manufactured home communities are located along Gallahad Way and Redwood Drive.

Multifamily properties are another option, closer to Huffine Lane. Contemporary condominiums built in the 2010s have units available for $350,000 to $550,000. There are also a few apartment complexes in the area. Roughly 40% of residents in the neighborhood are renters.

Staying active in neighborhood and city parks

Many of West Bozeman’s subdivisions have paved walking paths, encouraging recreational strolls. There are also multiple pocket parks and green spaces in the area. Minder Park has a small playground, and Norton East Park’s open field is outfitted with benches along its pathways.

Less than a mile north of the neighborhood is Valley West Park, with its wooden playground, picnic tables and sand volleyball courts. A natural wildlife area in the park surrounds Meyers Lake for birdwatching. Nearby is the Adam Bronken Memorial Sports Complex and its soccer fields. Bozeman Pond Park is a little over a mile east of West Boseman and has a playground, basketball court and climbing boulder. “There’s a lot to do here for little kids,” McCutcheon says. “Kids can play hockey on the ponds in the winter.” Fishing docks stretch out over the water, and there’s a swimming beach for dogs. Pets can also play at the Lewis and Bark Dog Park.

A-rated schools in the Bozeman school district

Children living in West Bozeman can attend Bozeman public schools. Hyalite Elementary School earns an A-minus grade from Niche, while Sacajawea Middle School scores an A. The A-minus-rated Gallatin High School has a theater program within its performing arts department. Students can also participate in Career Pathway programs for automotive technology, medical careers, welding and more. “No matter what school they went to, you think your child went to the best one, and that says a lot about Bozeman schools,” McCutcheon says.

For higher education, Montana State University’s campus is a little over 2 miles east of the neighborhood. The institution enrolls over 17,000 students and operates as Montana’s largest research entity with over 300 research labs.

Shops and restaurants in and around Gallatin Valley Mall

Since West Bozeman is primarily residential, there are only a handful of small businesses found along Huffine Lane. Sidewinders American Grill serves classic bar food and is military-themed. A little over a mile east of the neighborhood is Gallatin Valley Mall. National brands include Lululemon, Macy’s and Barnes & Noble. There’s also a Whole Foods Market and a Regal movie theater. El Rincon Del Marisco is a traditional Mexican Restaurant in the area. Across the street, there are more retail and dining options. Café Zydeco specializes in Cajun cuisine. Chain restaurants include Texas Roadhouse and Firehouse Subs. There’s also a Rosauers Supermarket. “If you live over by Valley West, you rarely have to go downtown for anything, because there’s everything you need,” McCutcheon says.

Navigating West Bozeman by bike, bus or car

Over 80 miles of bike trails and lanes wind through the city – some of which are found going through West Bozeman, creating a cyclist-friendly community. When it comes to commuting, the city’s Streamline bus service has stops along Fallon Street, Cottonwood Road and Ferguson Avenue. U.S. Highway 191, known as Huffine Lane, is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, traveling east and west through the city. Commuters can use this route to reach Butte to the west or Billings to the east. The Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is roughly 10 miles northwest.
