A riverside suburb in Pittsburgh
Those looking for a small town with scenic views have met their match in Brackenridge. “It’s considered a nice little town near the Allegheny River,” says Christine Spece, Realtor at Czekalski Real Estate Inc. who has been selling homes in the area for nearly two decades. The suburb offers affordable housing and riverside views while being close to downtown Pittsburgh for those who visit daily for work and play. “There’s a lot of people who move back here after growing up in the neighborhood,” says Joy Foust, a Realtor for Czekalski Real Estate Inc. who was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area. “First-time homebuyers are also attracted here since it's less expansive than the city.” Major employers in the area include the Allegheny Valley Hospital, Alleghany Technologies Inc. and Allied Universal Security Services. Brackenridge is a very close-knit community that has an old-school feel, Foust says. “We had an officer pass away recently and the entire community felt it. It was a big thing that has brought us closer.”

Fishing at Brackenridge Memorial Park
Brackenridge provides a couple of outdoor recreation spots. On the Allegheny River, the Brackenridge Memorial Park honors veterans on a wall inscribed with the names of fallen soldiers and an archway reminiscent of stone castle towers. The green space also has a ball field for casual pick-up games, or people can watch boaters on the river and go fishing. The Allegheny River is a popular destination in the summer for boating and kayaking. Since the Brackenridge Heights Golf Course is temporarily closed, golfers can visit Hill Crest Country Club to practice their swing. Athletes head to Deborah D. Booker Community Center for its sports courts and fitness center.

Eat seafood at Devil Dog Saloon
Brackenridge is right next to Tarentum, a neighborhood known for its walkable shops and restaurants. “The business district has been evolving with a lot of new businesses in Tarentum. We don’t have a lot of restaurants here but are in walking distance of those things,” Spece says. Still, Brackenridge does offer a few food spots. At Vibo’s bakery, people can get easy take-out meatball sandwiches or garlic bread. “It’s the only bakery on this side of the river. We go there a lot for bread and rolls. They are very good,” Spece says. Alternatively, folks can dine in at Devil Dog Saloon, where people regularly eat crab legs or fish sandwiches while watching a sports game at the bar. People can head to Ernie’s Tavern, which offers a great deal on wings. While fun is had at these bars, more adventure is found in downtown Pittsburgh at places like Cavo Nightclub and Avalon Social. For grocery restocks, residents visit Aldi.
