Braddock has a rich history, dating back to days before America’s foundations. The neighborhood gets its name from the general who fought in the Battle of Monongahela during the French and Indian War in 1755. Today, Braddock’s Battlefield History Center celebrates this history. Later, after Pittsburgh’s establishment, Braddock became the center of steel production, with Andrew Carnegie building the Edgar Thompson Steel Works factory in 1873. The factory is one of the last of its kind left functioning in the region, maintaining the area’s more industrial feel and highlighting its roots. Beyond the steel mill, Braddock’s streets are more residential, featuring turn-of-the-century homes and occasional Gothic architecture like the Carnegie Library.

Hilltop golf courses and steel sites managed by the National Parks
Grand View Golf Club takes up 160 acres of the hilltop and overlooks Edgar Thompson. To the west of Braddock, the Carrie Blast Furnaces National Historic Landmark further celebrates the industrial roots of the area. These types of furnaces are some of the few left in the region that people can tour to learn about steel production. “There’s a lot of biking and hiking trails,” says Broker Jason Mazzei with Realty One Group Gold Standard. “A lot of bicycle groups meet up.” These trails include the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), which runs for 150 miles from Cumberland, Maryland to downtown Pittsburgh. Bikers and walkers can follow the course just across the Monongahela River from Braddock. Kennywood is also on this side of the river, providing some of the most thrilling rollercoasters in the country. “You do have the river right there. There’s a lot of boating activity, but not any marinas or restaurants where the boats can go,” Mazzei says. “It’s more of a pass-through area for boats to get where they want to go.”

Braddock's turn-of-the-century foursquares with front porches
Braddock is full of older foursquares and traditional farmhouses. Homes are close enough to appear to be rowhomes but are actually detached. Most houses in Braddock feature front porches that many residents fill with outdoor furniture and the occasional potted plant. Front yards are often just a couple of feet of space, but property owners mark them off with fences. Some houses sit on a slight incline, with stone steps connecting porches to Braddock’s wide sidewalks. While some people can park on the street, alleyways behind homes often include detached garages. Most homes in Braddock list for below $100,000, though some properties might cost closer to $200,000.

Buses along Braddock Avenue connect the neighborhood
Braddock Avenue is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, lined with businesses and restaurants. Buses also run along this avenue to connect residents to neighborhood amenities, like the Allegheny Health Network Urgent Care Center – Braddock. “For the older part of Braddock on the hill, you’ll probably need a car to get places,” Mazzei says. Rankin Bridge crosses the Monongahela to link Braddock with Whitaker and Kennywood. Just a bit past Swissvale, I-376 takes residents the 11 miles to downtown Pittsburgh and 30 to Pittsburgh International Airport.

Braddock's urban farm and sandwich shops
Portogallo Peppers N’AT is a Braddock staple, selling sandwiches topped with pepper spreads. The restaurant sells the spreads in jars for customers to take home with them. People can also come here to enjoy live music every night. For Mexican, folks can head over to Brassero Grill. Grow Pittsburgh maintains Braddock Farms, an urban farm site in the center of the neighborhood featuring a greenhouse and a roadside farm stand. The farm sells the produce it grows there, but also partners with other local farmers to provide more options. It also offers hands-on educational programs to teach kids and adults how to garden. For groceries, Braddock Hills Shopping Center has a Giant Eagle, just 1.2 miles away. Over 1.5 miles away, there’s an Aldi off Ardmore Boulevard.

Local fall festivals and sports games in downtown Pittsburgh
Every October, Braddock Farms hosts the Fall Festival, where residents can gather to decorate pumpkins and watch demonstrations for making cider. Also in October, the Festival of Combustion celebrates the steel industry with steel and glass demonstrations, flame throwers, live music and food trucks. At Kennywood, Fall Fantasy Parades run through August, featuring over 130 local university and high school bands. Because the neighborhood is so close to downtown, people can also head into the city for Steelers and Pirates games.
