Deer Ridge/Marsh Creek
Country clubs, horse farms and golf courses galore
Upscale and luxury amenities are the hallmarks of this neighborhood. Club Los Meganos, the centerpiece of the Marsh Creek subdivision, is a massive luxury resort with a pool, spa, a gym and restaurant. It’s a popular place in the neighborhood for socializing, dining and weddings. Across the street, golfers can book a tee time at the Brentwood Golf Course or head north to Shadow Lakes Club. East of the neighborhood is the greater Marsh Creek community where horse farms, orchards and agriculture begin and the suburbs end. “There are a lot of horse farms and horse trails out in Marsh Creek. One time I was getting McDonald’s out there, and I was in the drive-thru, and when I turned the corner there was someone on a horse at the pick-up window,” Kenney says.Community parks, Mount Diablo hiking
Oak Meadow Park is the neighborhood’s largest community park. Located next to Krey Elementary School, there’s plenty of room for a baseball game, a soccer match or enjoying a picnic in a grassy field. The kids can play on the playground equipment while a paved walkway provides the opportunity to get your steps in. Several dog-friendly parks — Pupperino’s Park and Puppotron’s Field — are a great spot to let the dogs run around off-leash. Hiking opportunities are plentiful here. The neighborhood backs up to Marsh Creek State Historic Park and Round Valley Regional Preserve, both of which offer trails that wind across the Mount Diablo foothills.Highly rated Bay Area schools
Schools are a major draw for the area, and there’s an elementary, middle and high school within walking and biking distance from many homes. Students start at R. Paul Krey Elementary School before moving on to J. Douglas Adams Middle School, both of which earn A-minus ratings from Niche. A-rated Heritage High School offers a wide range of clubs and afterschool activities, including amateur radio, robotics and photography. The high school enrolls around 2,600 students every year.Los Medanos College/Brentwood is in the southern part of the neighborhood. The community college offers business, computer science and other classes there.
New construction with mountain views
The neighborhood’s subdivisions were largely built within the last 20 years and feature spacious, contemporary style homes, many of which have Mediterranean influences like stucco exteriors and tiled rooftops. Its curved streets are lined with sidewalks and well-maintained grass and trees. In the northern part of the neighborhood, prices range between $750,000 and $1.2 million dollars for a single-family home. The southern end of the neighborhood, the Marsh Creek area, offers diverse floorplans, ranging from 1,500 to more than 3,000 square feet. Because of the array of home sizes, home price can range from $750,000 to $2 million. The Marsh Creek area is also home to the Trilogy at the Vineyards, a 55-plus community next to Club Los Meganos.Shopping and dining are close to home on Balfour Road
Several small shopping plazas are close by, so residents won’t have to travel far for everyday essentials. The commercial area at the corner of John Muir Parkway and Balfour Road has a Walgreens, several gas stations, independent businesses and medical offices. Restaurants include Digger’s Diner, a downhome eatery that opens at 7 a.m. every day, and Vic Stewart’s, an upscale steakhouse and American grill. The nearest grocery store is Safeway, located less than a mile away. For everything else, The Streets of Brentwood shopping district is the closest major shopping district, about 3 miles north.Getting around the East Bay
While commuting to downtown San Francisco can be as much as two hours one way, there are plenty of commuters in the area. “You can get more for your money here for a lower price than closer to San Francisco,” says Realtor Brian Sharpe of Sharpe Realty, a longtime area resident. “If you don’t want to fight the traffic, it’s a short drive to Antioch to catch the BART train into town.” Antioch is the easternmost stop for the Bay Area Rapid Transit train system.
