A peaceful suburb next to an old steel mill town
Outside of Pennsylvania’s state capital, the quiet suburb of Bressler was once a bustling workman hub back when the steel mills, quarries and brickyards nearby along the Susquehanna River first came to life. Today, the established neighborhood is returning to its heyday with a blend of new residents and those whose families have lived here for generations. “Bressler is up and coming and looking at an impending revival,” says local Realtor Christen Tribbitt of Keller Williams Elite. “There’s a positive change happening. The local municipality is continuing to see business and homeowners come into the area and bring it back to its golden age.”
Predominately residential, Bressler comprises a north-south street grid with a deep row of trees to the east and west. Though technically part of the Swatara Township, the community sits atop a hill next to Steelton, a historic industrialized borough where steelmakers still forge ahead. Even with heavy industry at the doorstep, things stay pretty peaceful in Bressler. “The neighborhood has a quiet, small-town vibe,” says Brenda Garcia of Weichert Realtors First Choice. “There aren’t many main streets in Bressler, so there’s no traffic and car noise.”

The community isn’t tucked away too far from the city and still provides proximity to Interstate 283 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, connecting residents to Downtown Harrisburg within 15 minutes. “It’s right off the turnpike and sits in a very good location for those who need to commute,” Tribbitt says. The neighborhood also boasts a location right next to the Harrisburg International Airport, which is only 10 minutes east.

Other common styles include worker’s cottages from the early 1900s and midcentury Cape Cods. Townhouses and modest raised ranches start at $110,000, and prices reach $230,000 for a remodeled Colonial Revival. “More folks are coming in and breathing new life into the existing properties,” Tribbitt says. “But property values are still at an attainable price point.”
