A relaxed, waterfront lifestyle blends with convenience in central New York
Lakeside living and proximity to its surrounding communities pull residents to Youngs-Brewerton, a neighborhood comprised of two census-designated places within the Finger Lakes Region of central New York. The Oneida River streams through portions of the enclave, while the Oneida Lake cradles its northwestern border – both create a scenic backdrop that fosters the relaxed, recreation-oriented lifestyle that Youngs-Brewerton is lauded for. Still, residents are only a few miles from central New York’s most bustling cities. “People who live here find it convenient to get to Syracuse, but it also feels like you’re in the country,” says Audrey Grant, real estate agent for Howard Hanna and area resident for 25 years. “You can drive 20 minutes in any direction, and you’ll never know what you’ll find. We are close to apple orchards but also close to Albany and Rochester.”
Waterside living along Oneida Lake is a draw
Home styles and prices range greatly in Youngs-Brewerton, from small Cape Cods to colonial-inspired styles. Modest ranch houses and smaller cottage styles may list between $120,000 and $220,000. Bi- and split-levels are common along the curved residential streets in this neighborhood, ranging from $275,000 to $975,000. Many larger New Traditional houses make up most of the lakefront residences and range between $360,000 and $1.5 million, depending on square footage and lot size. These larger, luxury properties sit on lots up to 3 acres, many with in-ground pools and boat docks or water access.
As expected, almost all homes on the water in Youngs-Brewerton feature private docks.

Oneida Lake offers abundant recreation
Oneida Shores County Park allows locals to enjoy the lake through its boating ramp and sandy beach. “It’s a great place to be during summer,” says Tom Bonus, who works for Oneida Shores County Park. “People like to fish here; you can catch walleye and bass, and we have a bass tournament each year.” Parkgoers can take their kayaks out to Muskrat Bay or sign up for a sailing lesson. The year-round park also features campgrounds and a children’s playground. Additional recreational opportunities away from the water abound in the area. Plank Road Park off Mud Mill Road offers another playground and pavilion for the community, and just south golfers can hone their skills at the Greens At Beaumont golf course. The ice rinks at the Midstate Athletic Community Center host open skate times and youth hockey leagues. As the fall approaches, people pick their own Goldrush, Fuji, and Honeycrisp apples at Woznica Orchard, which is 4 miles east of Cicero. Locals can also drive to the Rosamund Gifford Zoo, about 17 miles from Brewerton, to visit Yaad and Tukada, the twin elephants who were born in 2022.

Community Polar Plunge at Oneida Shores Park
The community bands together each year at the Oneida Shores County Park Polar Plunge in December. Participants rush into the lake’s freezing waters during the annual event to raise money for the local Special Olympics New York athletes. “Sometimes the lake is frozen, and we have to break the ice so they can jump in,” Bonus says. “One year, it was too solid to crack, so we had a fire truck come, and instead of jumping into the lake, people ran through the water from the firehoses.” Race enthusiasts can catch an event at the Brewerton Speedway between May and October. The New York State Fair is held annually outside of Syracuse for about two weeks in the summer.
