The South Alabama city of Brewton has long been a center of lumber milling, but has grown into a vibrant community with good schools, outdoor attractions and events. The lumber industry is still strong in Brewton, but the area has diversified its economy with health care and manufacturing. The community also holds annual events, including the Alabama Blueberry Festival, and has multiple parks for residents to enjoy. “It’s just a good little town, not your typical red clay road town. There’s not another one like it,” says Sandy English, the broker/owner of English Realty and a Brewton resident.

Lumber milling, manufacturing and health care are top industries
The lumber industry is a major employer in Brewton, with Georgia Pacific maintaining a large mill on the city's southern edge. The T.R. Miller Mill has been in operation for over 150 years. The community’s access to the railroad and abundant forests made Brewton a significant trading and lumber milling center, earning the moniker of the “richest little town in the South.”
English says some smells emerge from the mills, but they are far enough away not to affect residents. Other manufacturers include Brewton Iron Works and Grede, a ductile casting producer. DW McMillan Memorial Hospital also employs hundreds.
The lumber industry remains a key employer in Brewton, with Georgia Pacific operating a major mill on the city’s southern outskirts.
With a legacy spanning more than 150 years, the T.R. Miller Mill stands as one of the oldest continuously operating lumber mills in the United States, symbolizing Brewton’s enduring industrial heritage.

A mix of housing options with no HOA activity
Ranch-style homes can range from $130,000 to $250,000. Split-Levels, Greek revivals and New Traditionals cost between $290,000 and $500,000. Land is available. Homes often are on gridded streets with larger lot sizes and large oaks accenting lawns. “We have a variety of houses for every income,” says English. The community does not have a homeowners' association.
English says Brewton is attracting people looking to escape colder weather, including retirees. However, hurricanes and tornadoes have impacted the area in the past. Maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency also show a risk of flooding.
“They like our weather, (and Brewton) is only an hour and a half from Pensacola Beach, so they're looking for weather rather than the ice and the freezing and the storms,” says English.
