Brice has deep roots and homes that rarely change hands

The village of Brice was founded in 1880 along the railroad tracks. The population at the 2020 census was only 93. The neighborhood of Brice is much bigger as the number of houses extends southward to Blacklick Creek. There's also a sense of loyalty for those who live there. “People who own a house have been in that area for a long time. The homes don’t turn over very quickly,” says Amy Paul, a Realtor with e-Merge Real Estate Premium.

Farmhouses and bi-levels offer variety in size and style

The homes in the village of Brice are located at the corner of Brice and Refugee Roads, south of the railroad tracks. The houses date to the early 20th century. It’s common to see a farmhouse or a Foursquare home built in 1900 or a two-story built in 1922. These homes have anywhere from two to four bedrooms with up to 1,800 square feet with a detached garage. The houses outside the immediate village were built between the late 1970s and the early 2000s. These have two to three bedrooms and have between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet. The homes in the area are between $200,000 and $300,000. “It’s a nice affordable area, but the price will vary greatly with the number of older homes,” Paul says. “Some have been renovated, and some need renovation, so it depends on what you’re looking for.” The styles of homes primarily are bi-level and two-story contemporary.

Local schools offer college credit and weekly family updates

The neighborhood is zoned for Dunloe Elementary, Groveport Madison Middle School Central and Groveport Madison High School, all within the Groveport Madison Local School District. Dunloe Elementary publishes a Family Connection newsletter weekly that keeps families up to date on upcoming events and information about transportation and other happenings at the school. Groveport Madison Middle School Central students can take College Credit Plus courses, which provide an opportunity to gain simultaneous high school and college credit. Groveport Madison High School receives a B-minus grade on Niche for the quality of teachers and college preparation.

Metro park offers peaceful walks and prime birdwatching spots

Drive a little to the south on Gender Road, and you’re at the outskirts of Pickerington Ponds Metro Park. It’s a state nature preserve and a prime spot for birdwatching. The park has six trails and five overlooks designed for observing birds and other wildlife, so don’t forget your binoculars. If you do, there are viewers available at the observation decks. If you look closely enough, you may see some bald eagle nests on a couple of the trails.

Neighborhood center has groceries, Asian food and pub fare

From grocery shopping and dining to the neighborhood pub, Gender Road Towne Centre Is a one-stop shop. For all the everyday essentials, Kroger has a deli, bakery, pharmacy and online ordering. Hunan King specializes in Asian cuisine. Regulars love their Crab Rangoon and the crispy, Sweet and Sour Chicken. The place to watch the game, including NFL matchups, is Bentley’s Sports Grill and Lounge on the north end of Gender Road Towne Centre. In addition to the sports on the tube, their menu is beyond typical bar food. They have wings and burgers, but try their garlic butter salmon or garlic-flavored lamb chops for a different pub grub experience.

Open fields and quiet roads just minutes from downtown Columbus

Brice offers the balance of urban amenities that are close by and the feeling of being away from everything in a rural setting. “You’re close to the eastern intersection of Interstates 70 and 270, and that can get you to John Glenn Columbus International Airport in about 15 minutes,” Paul says. It will be less than 20 minutes via Interstate 70 to get you downtown. You don’t have to travel very far south on Gender or Brice Roads to see open fields and homes that are more spread out.
