Fighting a difficult reputation
Bridgeport’s reputation is less-than-stellar. Deindustrialization gutted the city in the late 20th century, leaving it economically devastated and full of crime. But even skeptics of this post-industrial Connecticut metropolis agree the North End has lots to offer. In this densely packed urban neighborhood, people live in single-family homes like Cape Cods behind small front lawns with chain link fences. Dollar stores, gas stations and takeout restaurants line Main Street, and to get outside, neighbors head to lush green parks with disc golf courses and woodsy hikes.
Residents of surrounding Connecticut towns turn up their noses at Bridgeport because of its historic corruption and post-industrial depression. Factories in the city made steel, lipstick cases and aircraft tanks in the early 1900s before the economy plummeted. But the North End has developed a reputation as a quaint urban neighborhood, with its quaint 20th century architecture, tightly packed roads and neighborhood feel. Residents include a mix of generational families, professionals and students at nearby Sacred Heart University.

Charming homes built in the '40s and '50s adorn North End
North End streetscapes consist mainly of Cape Cod-style houses behind chain link fences, underneath telephone poles and trees. Popular 20th-century models like ranch-style houses and condominiums also have a presence. Bridgeport has the third-highest property tax rate in the nation, behind Detroit and the nearby city of Waterbury, but even so, getting a home in the North End is considered a good deal. Prices range from $162,000 to $609,000. “For the cost, the real estate in North End is a great value,” says Antonio Salerno of RE/MAX Heritage, because of the low sticker prices.

"Park City" has 1,300 acres of open space
Even though it’s known for its post-industrial grit, Bridgeport dubbed itself the “Park City” because of an effort to add more urban green space. Bridgeport has 1,300 acres of open space and a pocket park in almost every neighborhood. The 74-acre Elton Rogers Woodland Park spans part of the North End, offering neighbors a spot to walk through the woods. Kids explore the playground and splash pad at Puglio Park, and Veterans Memorial Park has a dog park and disc golf course.
