A diverse, historic community in Bridgeport
With its 19th-century properties, historic districts, and industrial and coastal areas, West End-West Side is a Bridgeport neighborhood that wears its storied heart on its sleeve. “The multifamily homes from the 1800s in West End were the first in the city to be built specifically as rentals for workers,” says John Hackett, broker of the John Hackett Team at William Raveis Real Estate, who was born and raised in Bridgeport. “Today, it draws investors who want to rent out the units, or families who want to live in one unit and rent out the others,” Hackett adds. As they stroll down the sidewalks, residents catch glimpses of the city’s bustling manufacturing past, but they’ll also see a range of 21st-century services, including public parks, a large antique market, masjids, and churches with services in English and Spanish. In the southern section of the neighborhood, there’s still an industrial area with an asphalt plant and waste processing facilities.
20th century multifamily homes in an urban landscape
Victorian multi-family houses and cottages from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are tightly packed on gridded city streets. While there are some cottages and rowhouses that go on the market priced between $140,000 and $450,000, multi-family properties make up most of the housing stock. “A lot of people will see the West End as a stepping stone where they can build housing equity or their investment portfolio,” Hackett says. Multifamily homes with two to three units cost between $370,000 and $570,000, while properties with more than 10 units are priced between $900,000 and $1 million.

Sports courts at public parks in West End-West Side
City parks are peppered throughout the neighborhood, allowing residents to walk to a playground or basketball court easily. Spaces like McGovern Park have a couple of benches and playground equipment on a small stretch of grass. Residents can play baseball or a pickup game of basketball at Went Field Park, and kids can run around the playground or cool off at the splash pad. Locals sit in a shaded picnic pavilion while watching basketball or soccer games at the fields at West Side II Park. They can also walk through the manicured grounds of Mountain Grove Cemetery, which is the gravesite of famous showman and former Bridgeport mayor P. T. Barnum and his protégé Tom Thumb. Fishers and boaters can dock at the Cedar Marina after a day of exploring the Black Rock Harbor, but residents travel to Seaside Park for beach access. The park is a little over a mile southeast of the neighborhood and is a popular destination for coastal nature walks, swimming or beach volleyball.

Seafood and shopping at Captain Cove’s Seaport
“Fairfield Avenue in Black Rock is the go-to spot for restaurants and nightlife or a bar crawl, but there are a couple of local food spots in the neighborhood,” Hackett says. Locals can enjoy drunken noodles and other Thai dishes in a comfortable setting at Ruuthai's Kitchen or Vietnamese fare from Pho Hong Thom. Cafeteria Morla Restaurant is a local favorite for authentic Puerto Rican food. Seasonally, locals can grab a lobster roll and stroll the shops on the boardwalk at Captain Cove’s Seaport marina. Residents can walk to corner stores to grab snacks and essentials or go grocery shopping at Compare Foods, which is the largest market in the neighborhood. They can also travel a mile to Black Rock for Stop and Shop, a regional grocery chain. Locals find a vast collection of vintage clothes, home goods and furniture at Mongers Market, a large flea market in a renovated factory that is only open on Sundays.

Attend a symphony concert at the Klein Memorial Auditorium
Residents can watch the Greater Bridgeport Symphony and other musical performances at the Klein Memorial Auditorium, a historic Art Deco-style auditorium with a Broadway-sized stage. When the chilly spring finally turns to summer, residents flock to Captain’s Cove Seaport to order seafood and sit on the dock overlooking the cove. “People will dock their boats in the marina to listen to the live music at Captain’s Cove. It’s a really fun environment,” says Paula Bachman, broker/owner at Property Choices Real Estate, who has served the area for 16 years.

Major highways and trains route to New York
Residents can walk to a local restaurant or public park on the sidewalk-lined streets, but commuters often rely on cars and public transportation. Buses operated by Greater Bridgeport Transit take locals throughout the city, and they can travel a mile east to arrive downtown. Along the historic Railroad Avenue Industrial District, the stone viaduct built in the 1890s carries passenger train tracks through the neighborhood. At the downtown Bridgeport station, commuters headed to New York City can board a train operated by the Metro-North Railroad, which will take them the 60 miles southwest to Grand Central Station. Those traveling by car can merge onto Interstate 95. West End-West Side has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 7 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
