This northern West Virginia city prides itself on opportunity
Settled in the late 1700s, Bridgeport received its name from a small bridge along Simpson Creek. The city’s slogan, “Opportunity Lives Here,” underscores its long economic history, which stretches from the gristmills and cattle ports of years past to the United Hospital Center, an FBI office complex and other leading employers. The city also offers various ways to recreate, dine and shop, making it a regular stop for those beyond city limits. "It's a great small town," says Fran Pollick, a local Realtor with Homefinders Plus Real Estate. “They are constantly innovating and trying to make the city better.”

Bridgeport Sports Complex and the nationally recogized Pete Dye Golf Club
Bridgeport Parks and Recreation maintains several green spaces like Deegan & Hinkle Lakes Park, the city's hot spot for fishing. Bridge Sports Complex and Citynet Center host youth leagues and programming for all ages. Pete Dye Golf Club is situated just northwest and was named one of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses by Golf Digest in 2023. Fun indoors takes place at The Hive Entertainment, home to the largest trampoline park in the state. “Bridgeport is an easy day trip to outdoor recreation like state parks with hiking and paddling,” Pollick says. Valley Falls State Park offers both and is a 22-mile trip northeast.

From early 1900s homes to newly built subdivisions
Bridgeport’s median single-family home price is $325,000, which falls below the national figure. The city comprises a suburban residential landscape. Its oldest homes date back to the early 1900s and come in varying architectural styles, including American Foursquares and colonials. Spreading outward are tree-lined streets featuring mid-to-late 20th-century homes, typically in ranch and split-level styles. Homeowners will also find new traditional-style houses built over the last 25 years within subdivisions closer to the city’s outer edges.

Getting around on Interstate 79
Interstate 79 runs through the city’s northwestern side, connecting Bridgeport to surrounding communities. “People commute to Morgantown and Fairmount regularly,” Pollick says. “If you’re in a major city, it might take you 45 minutes to go 8 miles. Here, in 45 minutes, you can go 30 miles.” For those making daily trips north, Fairmount is 18 miles out and Morgantown is 35 miles. North Central West Virginia Airport sits within city limits and services flights to Charlotte, Orlando and several other destinations. The airport is expected to open a new terminal in the summer of 2025.
Harrison County Schools serves the city
Students across the city attend Harrison County Schools, which maintains a B rating on Niche. The district’s United Technical Center grants high school students the opportunity to explore different career fields through a hands-on learning curriculum. Recent graduates can attend West Virginia Junior College – Bridgepoint or commute west to Salem University or north to Fairmont State University. West Virginia University, the state's flagship public research institute, is in Morgantown.

Light Up Night garners thousands of attendees
Crowds fill Main Street in early December for the city’s annual Light Up Night. “It draws in thousands of people,” Pollick shares. “They light up a big tree and do fireworks as well.” Attendees can also expect performances from local school choirs and dance teams, complimentary refreshments and a visit from Santa and Ms. Claus. Bridgeport also rings in the warm weather with the ABB Summer Kickoff & Food Truck Festival, which also takes place along Main Street.
Bridgeport's snow concerns and crime statistics
“We experience all four seasons, and our winters are relatively mild,” Pollick says. She also notes that tornadoes and hurricanes are not of concern for the city. “Blizzards would be the most significant weather event,” she says. Bridgeport’s Office of Emergency Management allows residents to sign up for emergency alerts from its website, and the West Virginia Department of Transportation salts and clears roads when necessary.
According to FBI data, Bridgeport’s property crime experienced a slight increase in 2023, while violent crimes dropped 44%.
