Bridgewater offers a small town center in the Shenandoah Valley

Amid the Shenandoah Valley and eastern Appalachia, the Bridgewater community consists of a town center giving way to extensive farmland in northwestern Virginia. The area is at the foot of Shenandoah Mountain, with the ridge tracing the skyline and visible from many parts of Bridgewater. “Bridgewater is a bedroom community of the Harrisonburg area,” says Greg Pfaff, a real estate agent and associate broker with Kline May Realty. “It’s a really nice little area. It’s very easy to get everywhere; it’s a nice place to be where you’re not in the city, but you don’t have to pack a lunch to get there.”

The town center is primarily residential, bisected by a main street lined with restaurants, but also includes the Bridgewater College campus. The community is close to recreational outlets, ranging from established town parks to the wilderness of the mountains. “Bridgewater is quite unique in the perspective of there are a lot of things to do,” says Oleksii Humaniuk, an associate agent with Re/Max Performance. ““It’s a very quiet town. They provide a lot – they have the only covered tennis court in the area, a movie theater and the ice-skating rink that are all available for residents.”

A residential atmosphere giving way to the Shenandoah landscape

Homes line residential streets within the town section of Bridgewater, becoming spaced farther apart as the landscape becomes more rural to the west. A few homes can date to the 1800s, but most were built in the late 20th century to the present, with some as new as the 2020s. “It’s a very old town, but there are a fair amount of newer homes that are mostly stick-built,” Pfaff says. “There are also some larger homes covering more acreage and more square feet.” Many single-family homes in Bridgewater proper range from $300,000 to $450,000 and are typically ranch-style or colonial-style homes. Properties on the more rural, western side of the community can also include manufactured homes and custom-built designs. Prices on the west side can vary, depending on property size and acreage.

Town parks in central Bridgewater and outdoor recreation beyond

Several established parks sit in the town center of Bridgewater in the northwestern part of the community. “The town itself has a lot of amenities,” Pfaff says. “They have a lot of town parks right on the river, an ice-skating rink and a public putt-putt golf course.” Bridgewater Mini-Golf at Sandy Bottom Park, located in the town near the river, offers both a nine-hole, par-3 course and putt-putt. Wildwood Park and Edgebrier Park are among the green spaces on the North River. Several sports fields and the Bridgewater Soccer Complex are also along the water.

The river itself is popular for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Oakdale Park offers baseball fields, a basketball court and picnic areas in the town’s center. Away from the town itself, campgrounds and trails are scattered across the Shenandoah Mountain landscape leading to the state line to the west. The region includes the North River Gorge Trail, Festival/Narrowback Trailhead and Reddish Knob, the latter of which rises over 4,300 feet.

Most restaurants in Bridgewater are concentrated along Main Street, which runs through the center of the town area and is part of Route 42. Red Apple Chinese Restaurant and Francesco’s Bridgewater serve up international fare, while the Cracked Pillar Pub specializes in comfort food and the Sugar & Bean Café is open for breakfast and lunch. “There are a ton of coffee shops and restaurants,” Humaniuk says. “The Coffee Room is my favorite for coffee, while Sugar & Bean has great food. El Charro is a really good Mexican restaurant.” In central Bridgewater, Bluestone Vineyard is about 2 miles from Main Street and hosts events like weddings, bingo games and live music. About 5 miles up the road from the town center, grocery shoppers can drive to a Walmart or Food Lion.

Getting around western Virginia on Interstate 81 and Route 11

Interstate 81 and Route 11 run parallel to each other just east of Bridgewater. “It’s such an easy in, easy out because of 81 and Route 11,” Pfaff says. “Route 11 goes down south to Augusta and north to Harrisonburg. Interstate 81 is the bigger thoroughfare and close to downtown Bridgewater. You’re close to Harrisonburg and JMU, which is the more citified area.” I-81 and Route 11 follow the western slope of the state and are accessible between 2 and 4 miles east, with 81 linking Bridgewater to areas like Bristol, Roanoke and Lexington within Virginia. State Route 42 connects the community to Harrisonburg, less than 10 miles north.

Ice skating at Generations Park and exhibitions at Bridgewater College

Generations Park serves as a multi-purpose venue for the Bridgewater community, situated near the middle of the town area. In the winter, locals frequent the venue for ice skating, and in warmer months it hosts events like the After Dark at Gen Park concert series and is a popular place for pickleball. “The ice-skating rink is a big draw,” Pfaff says. The Beverly Perdue Art Gallery at Bridgewater College is open to the public and hosts artists, speakers and exhibits. Spring Yard Sale Day brings the community together, often in May or June, to shop well-loved items. “The yard sale is huge,” Pfaff says. “People from all over go there.” Oakdale Park is home to the community’s annual Labor Day celebration, which features fireworks, rides, vendors and more.
