Bristol is rural and spacious, but not secluded or isolated

Bristol is known for its quiet, spacious lots and various housing styles, each a short drive from outdoor recreation opportunities and nearby cities. Rural and agricultural at its roots, the area is slowly growing as more homebuyers want the peace and space it offers. Between the neighborhood's forests, farms and fields, most homes have at least a half-acre lot. Homes outside the village center usually have between 3 and 60 acres – much larger than in nearby Kenosha , Wisconsin's fourth-most populated city. "One thing people like is that they're far enough from the cities to have a decent amount of space, but close enough to the cities that they're not inconvenient to get to," says Justin Meuller, a Realtor with Re/Max Premier Properties, who has been selling in the area for over 20 years.

Housing styles range from modest cottages to million-dollar ramblers

Cape Cods and cottages are along county roads, and ranch-style homes and split-levels from the middle of the 20th century line small subdivisions. The older styles range between $180,000 and $320,000, while Colonial Revivals and farmhouses range between $320,000 and $500,000. New Traditional, Modern Craftsman homes and ramblers are the newest styles in modern developments. They sell for $530,000 to $1 million. According to the U.S. Census, the population doubled from 2010 to 2020, and new homes sell quickly. "We see a fair amount of people moving up from Illinois because the taxes in Wisconsin are significantly lower," Mueller says. "So, some people move here and commute across the border into Illinois every day." Rainbow Lake Manor is a manufactured home community for residents 55 and older. Homes there sell for $65,000 to $155,000.

Larger homes can vary between $530,000 and $1 million, depending on size and acreage.

Residents enjoy forest hikes, ice skating and ziplining in town

Bristol Woods County Park spans 200 acres, has a playground made of natural elements, over 4 miles of hiking trails and the Pringle Nature Center. Hansen Park is the local spot for baseball and beach volleyball. The park also has a playground and a large pavilion, which becomes an ice-skating rink in winter. Residents must bring skates since rentals are not available. Golfers can play a round at Bristol Oaks Golf Club, open to the public, and daring kids and teens zip through the air at Boundless Adventures. The aerial park is open seasonally, with ladders, obstacles and ziplines among the trees.

Bristol’s standalone school and the local high school are well-rated

Students can apply to attend any school in a nearby county or city through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's open enrollment program. However, those living in Bristol are zoned to attend Bristol School District's standalone school for kindergarten through eighth grade. "I found that a lot of times, people are coming to these more rural communities for the school districts," Mueller says. Bristol School is rated B-plus on Niche and feeds into Westosha Central High School, also rated B-plus. High school seniors have designated parking spots, which they can personalize with paint at the beginning of the school year.

Major highways connect to Kenosha, Milwaukee and Chicago

Interstate 94 is along Bristol's eastern border and divides Kenosha County in half. "Once you get west of Interstate 94, all the little towns are small in size and population," Mueller says. "It's very rural and spread out in that half of the county." Wisconsin Highway 50 and U.S. Route 45 intersect in the area. Downtown Milwaukee is about 40 miles north, while Chicago is 60 miles south. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is right off I-94, 30 miles away. Aurora Medical Center and Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital are just beyond Bristol's northeastern corner.
