Fieldston
Neighborhood in Bronx, New York
Bronx County 10463, 10471
Tudor-style homes, Colonial Revival estates and Mediterranean-style mansions
Nearly every Fieldston home has its own unique identity, revealing an eclectic range of architecture throughout. Buyers may find stone and stucco Tudor-style homes, colonial revival estates, Craftsman-style abodes, Medieval Revivals and Mediterranean-style mansions. “They’re typically priced in the $2.5 to $5 million range,” says Susswein. Given its landmarked status, residents must seek approval for any changes made to the front-facing, historic exteriors, including some repairs. There are no multifamily dwellings or mixed-use buildings within the historic district, but some prewar co-ops can be found one block away from the landmarked district, with price points ranging from $145,000 to $330,000. Just outside the historic district, in another private community dubbed Villanova Heights, newer modern mansions designed by top architects like Robert A.M. Stern are available with prices starting at $7 million.Home to three of the nation’s most prestigious college-prep private schools
Located in Public School District 10, students who attend public schools go to either P.S. 81 Robert J. Christen School, an A-minus-ranked elementary school on Niche, or Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy, a combined middle and high school earning an overall B rating, and a 22 percent enrollment in AP courses. Most parents in Fieldston, however, send their children to one of the area’s three ultra-elite private schools: Horace Mann, Ethical Culture Fieldston School or Riverdale Country School. As members of the Ivy Preparatory School League, all three institutions regularly make it onto lists of best private and college-prep schools in the U.S. In fact, many families move to the area specifically for these schools.Tranquil, historic green spaces
Near the center of the neighborhood, Delafield Pond offers a quiet, private reprieve for residents. Brust Park, one of the oldest green spaces in the Riverdale area, has leafy walkways, benches and children’s play areas. However, the largest green space in the area is Van Cortlandt Park which abuts the neighborhood on the eastern side and contains 1,000 acres of hilly, forested land, complete with a freshwater lake and many recreational amenities, including football and soccer fields, fishing sites, horseback riding trails and tennis courts.Close to the 1 train and Metro-North
The 1 train is located at the Van Cortlandt Park-242 Street stop, which is walkable from Fieldston. The Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line also stops on the west side in Riverdale. MTA buses, as well as Hudson Rail Link buses, also serve the area. Midtown Manhattan is approximately 12 miles away by car.Limited dining and shopping within the neighborhood
Given the residential-only zoning, most shops, services and restaurants are found outside the neighborhood’s historic boundaries. Some markets, like Riverdale Market, can be found along Broadway. Local coffee shops, butchers, kosher delis and a few restaurants are farther south on Riverdale Avenue and Johnson Avenue. Larger chains, like BJ’s Wholesale, are at Riverdale Crossing Shopping Mall, while big-big grocery stores like Foodtown are also farther south along Broadway.
