The small, quiet neighborhood of Laconia is a pocket of East Bronx characterized by its established brick housing that offers a more spread-out nature than many other neighborhoods in the northern part of the city. “Laconia is pretty strictly residential,” says Miriam Rosa, a local real estate broker with Metro Star Realty. “When I’m driving through there, it’s definitely quieter because it's residential. There aren’t many people on the street because once they’re home, they’re home.” Rosa emphasizes that the peacefulness, paired with access to schools and transportation, makes Laconia an appealing neighborhood for families, and for anyone looking for a little more breathing room in New York City.

Laconia’s residential streets are neatly lined with narrow, single-family homes and townhouses, many with red brick facades. Rosa says a majority of the neighborhood is made up of one- to three-family homes, though a few apartment complexes are sprinkled in between. Local shops and restaurants outline the neighborhood. East Gun Hill Road, one of its main arteries, is lined with delis, grocery stores and diverse eateries. Restaurants include many Caribbean and Jamaican staples like Code Red Lounge and Hummingbird Grill. Sal & Dom’s Pastry Shop has been serving cookies, Italian pastries and coffee to the Laconia community since 1956.
