The small, quiet neighborhood of Laconia is a pocket of East Bronx characterized by its established brick housing that offers a more spread-out nature than many other neighborhoods in the northern part of the city. “Laconia is pretty strictly residential,” says Miriam Rosa, a local real estate broker with Metro Star Realty. “When I’m driving through there, it’s definitely quieter because it's residential. There aren’t many people on the street because once they’re home, they’re home.” Rosa emphasizes that the peacefulness, paired with access to schools and transportation, makes Laconia an appealing neighborhood for families, and for anyone looking for a little more breathing room in New York City.

Laconia’s residential streets are neatly lined with narrow, single-family homes and townhouses, many with red brick facades. Most have small yards and garages, allowing for even more space between neighbors. Rosa says a majority of the neighborhood is made up of one- to three-family homes, though a few apartment complexes are sprinkled in between. Rowhouses may price between the mid $400,000s to the mid $800,000s, while single-family homes can cost from $445,000 to up to $1.6 million. Students in Laconia are zoned to attend schools within the New York City Geographic District No. 11. Local shops and restaurants outline the neighborhood. East Gun Hill Road, one of its main arteries, is lined with delis, grocery stores and diverse eateries. Restaurants include many Caribbean and Jamaican staples like Code Red Lounge and Hummingbird Grill. Sal & Dom’s Pastry Shop has been serving cookies, Italian pastries and coffee to the Laconia community since 1956. Grocery options include Foodtown of Allerton Avenue and multiple Fine Fare Supermarket locations. For bigger retail names, residents can head to The Mall at Bay Plaza, less than two miles west. The shopping mall features big-box retailers like DSW and Sephora as well as department stores such as Marshall’s and Burlington.
