Olinville
New complexes contrast with established brick rowhouses
Despite a recent rezoning law allowing the new construction of multi-unit buildings, Olinville remains distinct because of its housing stock, which mainly contains brick buildings and homes. Rosa says the neighborhood has mostly private, single-family homes, but more multi-family complexes are popping up. “A lot of new construction in apartment buildings is coming up, especially regarding rental units,” she says. “But the main avenues all have private homes, between one and three-family.” While a 1-bedroom apartment in a co-op building may start at $80,000 to $225,000, pre-war colonial townhouses and Renaissance-style homes can range anywhere from $445,000 to $1.2 million. Some rowhouses have been converted into duplexes or multi-family homes.Plenty of schooling options in District No. 11
Olinville students are zoned for the city’s District No. 11. Though parents have a range of options within the district, they may opt to send their kids to PS 41 Gun Hill Road Elementary and Bronx Green Middle School. Both schools receive a C-plus grade from Niche and are only blocks away from the neighborhood. The local Bronx High School for Writing and Communication Arts earns a B-minus and is rated in the top 20% of schools in the city for its writing-heavy curriculum which focuses on both technical skills and creative writing. The B-minus-rated Bronx Lab School sits in the northeast corner of the neighborhood and is currently undergoing construction. “They’re renovating the school and expanding the school grounds,” Rosa says. “Once that reopens, they’ll have a lot of community events right across the street from the school.”Green space at Shoelace Park, recreation at Williamsbridge Oval
Olinville residents benefit from having proximity to many outdoor spaces and recreational facilities in the Bronx. Shoelace Park extends along the neighborhood’s westside, hugging the Bronx River. The green sliver of space has a playground, and paddlers take to the kayak launch to access the river. Trails provide scenic trails for dog walking, biking or an afternoon jog. The park’s east-west trails enter Woodlawn Cemetery, the final resting place of famous New Yorkers like writer Herman Melville and jazz musician Miles Davis. Further west still is Van Cortlandt Park, a 1,200-acre tract that features winding trails along the Van Cordlandt Lake, the historic Van Cordlandt House Museum and various athletic facilities, including tennis courts, baseball fields and cricket pitches. Closer to Olinville, the Williamsbridge Oval has additional sporting courts and is home to the Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center, which offers recreational programs for all ages. The southern section of Olinville borders the Bronx River Forest where lies the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo.Casual, diverse dining along two main thoroughfares
Diverse restaurants line White Plains Road, one of the neighborhood’s main arteries. Jamaican eats are served at Gold Star and the counter of Golden Krust Caribbean Restaurant down the street. A range of additional eateries along Allerton Avenue gives residents more choices, from casual pizza chains to contemporary Mexican spots. Allerton Diner is a neighborhood favorite for its laid-back atmosphere. Grocery options include Foodtown of White Plains and Western Beef Supermarket, which offers meats and seafood, as well as a bakery and deli. A few Fine Fare Supermarket locations are found along White Plains Road and Allerton Avenue.Local libraries provide a gathering space and events
Located in a brick Adam-style colonial building, the Wakefield Library has served the community since 1983. The newest addition to the library is a Teen Center, which provides educational resources and community events for teens. Free weekly events at the center include craft hours and themed activities on Fridays. The nearby Allerton Library also serves as a gathering spot and resource for the community. Apart from its own Teen Center and stacked events calendar, the Allerton Library features a multimedia studio, equipped with production stations for podcasts, audio and video.Access to subway and bus stations
The 2 and 5 lines of the NYC subway system run through Gun Hill Road Station and Allerton Avenue Station in Olinville. Bus stops are also clustered around the subway stations, and more are scattered throughout the neighborhood. For car drivers, the Bronx River Parkway borders the neighborhood’s west and connects to U.S. Route 1, Interstate 95 and Route 278.
