A quiet community in the Bronx
While the Bronx neighborhood of Unionport may not be as well-known as its northerly neighbor of Parkchester or the culturally significant South Bronx to the southwest, this small, close-knit community has its own very unique set of appeals. Realtor Maria Vivanco of EXIT Realty says, “It is situated in the middle of a metropolitan area and close to everything.” Unionport sits just 10 blocks south of the East Bronx “Medical Mile” and a mere 2 miles away from the iconic Bronx Zoo, while offering solid transportation access for both drivers and riders to access some of the Bronx and New York’s greatest features, from entertainment to employment opportunities. With a unique combination of easy transportation, local walkability and a relatively quiet atmosphere, Unionport stands out among its neighbors.

Vintage housing in a quiet environment
One of Unionport’s greatest strengths is its diversity of housing options. Near the Westchester subway station, postwar high-rises with balcony views of the East River offer 800-square-foot, one-bedroom apartments for between $160,000 and $180,000. Farther from the subway, detached Colonial Revivals with cheery siding and three to four bedrooms on small lots list in the $600,000 to $700,000 range, while seven-to-nine-bedroom, prewar attached rowhouses sell for between $1.25 and $1.5 million. Unionport’s streets are wider and quieter than neighboring communities, a feature that attracts many families with children to live here. Vivanco says, “It’s actually one of the quieter areas of the Bronx, as lots of residents prefer to live in condos here rather than have their own houses.”

Unionport’s dining scene expresses the wealth of cultural and culinary diversity that the Bronx has to offer. Sabrosura is locally renowned for its Latino-Chinese-Caribbean fusion food. From takeout to sit-down, gumbo to churrasco steak, this restaurant is so popular that it spawned its own sequel: Sabrosura 2, just six blocks away. Melanie’s Roti House serves authentic Guyanese food, while Jimmy’s Grand Café serves diner classics from 8 AM to 12:30 AM. A few local coffee shops allow residents to do remote work, chat or grab something on their way to the subway. Around the corner from the outdoors
Because of its heavily urbanized character, Unionport does not have much green space. However, its central location ensures that locals can walk or ride a few blocks to explore some of the Bronx’s most popular outdoor venues. Vivanco says, “It’s close to the Bronx Zoo, the botanical garden, many restaurants and City Island, the best place to be in the summer.” Just six blocks south in Castle Hill, Pugsley Creek Park has 84 acres of wild flora and fauna, lined by trails ending at a kayak launch into the East River. More adventurous residents of Unionport can cross Westchester Creek under the Interstate 95 overpass and access the massive Ferry Point Park and Playground in Throgs Neck, which has its own 18-hole golf course and a ferry stop for a trawler that can take travelers to Midtown Manhattan in style in under 40 minutes.
