To the north of where Gun Hill Road meets the Bronx River Parkway is Williamsbridge, an unassuming urban neighborhood in the north Bronx. The area’s roots stem from the Revolutionary War, hence the naming of Gun Hill Road, and it has seen waves of immigrants including Italian, Jewish Eastern European, and now Jamaican populations make their homes here. Housing is found in the low-rise brick buildings that populate the streets. Businesses, markets and restaurants can be found along White Plains Road, and the subway rumbles overhead — a distinguishing factor from nearby neighborhoods like Wakefield. “Williamsbridge is a bit more urban than Wakefield, which has gotten very popular. It’s the main artery for transportation and restaurants and it’s closer to the train,” says William Beltran, a Bronx native and real estate agent with Douglas Elliman.

Brick multi-family homes and co-op buildings
Co-ops and multi-family homes make up much of the housing in Williamsbridge. A two-bedroom co-op in a midcentury building goes for between $140,000 to $177,000. Multi-family buildings can take on various configurations, including two-family duplexes, which can run around $500,000, and three-story three-family houses, which might cost as much as $1.25 million. A single-family colonial is a rare find. The northern section of the neighborhood is more purely residential with longer walks to shopping and dining options, though many homes are designed with parking spots in front. There are also subsidized housing and NYCHA complexes in the area, including the Gun Hill Houses, south of Gun Hill Road, the Parkside Senior Center, and Sydney House on Tilden Street, which is a project of Habitat For Humanity.
Caribbean cuisine and Gun Hill Brewing Co.
Restaurants line White Plains Road, with options for Indian and African cuisine as well as Jamaican and Caribbean fare. Rocatone, Inc. Seafood serves jerk shrimp and chicken and Gold Star offers oxtail and Jamaican dishes. Gun Hill Brewing Co. has been in the Bronx since 2014 and its taproom offers a gathering space for people looking to enjoy locally brewed IPAs, stouts, and other beers. Groceries can be found at Cherry Valley Marketplace on East Gun Hill Road and Foodtown on White Plains Road.
Play spaces at Agnes Haywood
Off Barnes Avenue, residents use Agnes Haywood playground, which offers basketball and handball courts and play structures. South of Gun Hill Road, Gun Hill Playground has basketball courts and spray showers that can be used during the summer months. West of Bronx River Parkway, the Williamsbridge Oval is almost 20 acres and includes a football field, running track and pickleball courts.
