Life on the border line

Established in 1769, this community sits on the Massachusetts border, welcoming travelers as they cross north into New Hampshire. “It’s a small, rural residential New England community of 6,000 residents,” says Peter Webb, president of the Brookline Historical Society. “An active Conservation Commission oversees 22% of the property in town that is conservation land.” Part of this land is enjoyed by hikers, who trek the trails woven along the conserved land. The community appreciates this natural escape right in their backyard. In town, everyone comes together during annual events, such as the Christmas tree lighting and the Fourth of July parade. Webb shares that locals care for their community by joining the volunteer fire department and ambulance services.

Historic homes, broad backyards

Colonial homes, some centuries old, are closer to the downtown businesses in Brookline. Newer, Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes date closer to the 1980s and 1990s. Each home is accompanied by mature trees shading pockets of the backyard while leaving plenty of room to play in the sun on a backyard playset. Homes feature two- or three-car garages and flat paved driveways, easing the process of shoveling the winter snow out of the way. The area is competitively priced, between $451,000 and $1 million. This neighborhood is priced above neighboring areas, since there is high interest in its location. “In fact, the town has been growing at such a fast pace, they have put a moratorium on new construction,” says Laura Flanagan Chandler, Principal Broker at Monument Realty and top producer for Brookline for the last ten years.

Community on the crossroads

Routes 13 and 130 provide the main paths of travel through town. “There is no traffic light, only one blinking light,” Webb says. The community’s location, being right on the border, makes travel into nearby cities convenient. “It takes an hour and a half to Boston and 15 minutes to Nashua.” Logan International Airport is a 52-mile drive and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport is a 23-mile drive, making it convenient to travel for work and vacations.

Celebrations for all seasons

When it comes time to celebrate the holiday season, the community comes together, participating in events like the Fourth of July parade and Christmas tree lighting. “As weather permits, they hold an Ice Fishing Derby on the frozen lake,” Webb says. From town activities and days spent on the lake to exploring the parks and trying local restaurants, it is easy to see why residents want to stay in Brookline and why the area has become sought after by people moving to New Hampshire.
