Kylawn has ample green space

Brooklyn Center is filled with green space, and Kylawn is a snapshot of that. There are three parks in the neighborhood and several more within 1 mile. “One of the things we are most proud of is our parks,” says April Graves, mayor of Brooklyn Center. Each has its perks: Wangstad Park is a typical pocket park with a playground surrounded by houses, Kylawn Park has a skating rink and the Eugene H. Hagel Arboretum is a natural sanctuary. The neighborhood is close to the city’s premier shopping destination and has easy access to Interstate 94 and the Twin Cities.

Many parks in the neighborhood, and many more surrounding

The few sidewalks in the neighborhood lead to Kylawn Park, where amenities include a walking trail, playground and hockey rink. It neighbors the Eugene H. Hagel Arboretum, which has walking trails that wind through 8 acres of wetlands and flower gardens. Centennial Park, the city’s largest park at 48 acres, is less than 1 mile away. Several of the community’s largest events, including the annual Juneteenth Celebration and free concerts, are held at the park’s amphitheater. Brookdale Library is next to Centennial Park and hosts workshops, book clubs and social clubs.

Midcentury ranch-style homes make up most of Kylawn

Mid- to late-20th-century homes sit on the grassy lawns of Kylawn, shaded by spruce and maple trees. Driveways lead to one- and two-car garages, many of which are detached. Colorful ranch styles with vinyl siding make up most of the neighborhood, featuring hip and gable roofs that let the snow and rain roll off. Some split-levels add variety to the housing market. Prices for a two- to three-bedroom typically fall between $225,000 and $375,000. Townhouses usually cost $200,000 to $300,000.

Kylawn has noteworthy winter weather, with an annual snowfall of about 59 inches. If there is more than 2.5 inches on the street or 1 inch on the sidewalk, snowplows ride through the neighborhood. One side effect of the plows is blocked driveways, so the city encourages residents to shovel them after the plows come through. Homes near Kylawn Park and the arboretum are at risk of flooding, meaning flood insurance is required by most private and all federally-backed mortgage lenders.
