Lions offers a midcentury suburban vibe in Brooklyn Center

The small neighborhood of Lions on the north side of Brooklyn Center is a first-ring Minneapolis suburb with a distinct midcentury atmosphere. “North Minneapolis and Minneapolis proper have their own vibe,” says Realtor Doneva Renee Rawls of Wonderland Realty, who has over 25 years of experience. “Then there’s this first ring of suburbs, which is where the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s homes really shine.”
The community’s proximity to highways and ample outdoor recreational opportunities are also attractive to potential homebuyers. “It’s pretty convenient to downtown Minneapolis, which is where all the professionals work, so that’s certainly a plus,” says Realtor Nawal Jordan of Exit Realty Nexus, who has sold several homes in the area. “Certain areas are more family-oriented than others, and this is one of them.”

Cottages and ranch-style homes sell for under the national median

Cottages and ranch-style homes are common here. Many have broad front lawns and long driveways shaded with aspens or red and silver maples. Tall oaks and elms shade spacious, cedar privacy-fenced backyards and detached single-car garages.
Prices start at around $130,000 and rise to about $340,000. Large duplexes can sell for more than $440,000. The neighborhood’s median, which is close to $290,000, is about $130,000 below the national median as reported by the National Association of Realtors.

Shingle Creek is prone to flooding. Summers here are mild, with average high temperatures reaching about 80 degrees. Winters are cold, with average highs in the 20s. “We get quite a bit of snow, but you just have to get a good car and a good coat,” Rawls says. Brooklyn Center typically gets around 50 inches of snow annually.

Brooklyn Center Middle & High School’s STEAM programs

Lions is zoned to Brooklyn Center Community Schools, which earns a C-minus from Niche. Inter-district transfers are allowed by application. D-plus-rated Brooklyn Center Elementary serves kids between preschool and fifth grade. Older students attend the combined Brooklyn Center Middle & High School between sixth and 12th grades. Niche gives the middle school a C-minus and the high school a C. Middle schoolers may choose to specialize their studies in a STEAM-based pathway, including computer science, engineering or biomedical science. The high school’s Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science program, a continuation of the biomed pathway, allows students to work in hospital and lab settings as microbiologists, medical investigators, surgeons and more.

Recreation galore at Lions Park, along Shingle Creek Regional Trail

Lions Park features a basketball court, playground and a picnic shelter with a grill. The adjacent Centerbrook Golf Course, a nine-hole, par-three course, hosts various golf leagues, including men’s, women’s and youth leagues. Shingle Creek Park, less than 2 miles away from most homes, has a playground and a wading pool. The sprawling park also has athletic facilities, including a basketball court, a soccer field, a baseball diamond and rinks for hockey and broomball. The Shingle Creek Regional Trail connects Lions Park and Shingle Creek Park to Creekview Park, where there’s a rec center, a playground, a skate park and more outdoor recreational amenities. The nearly 9-mile paved trail also runs to Brookdale Library and Brooklyn Center Community Center, which has a heated indoor swimming pool and offers group fitness classes, including yoga and Pilates.

Shopping and dining on State Road 100 and Brooklyn Boulevard

State Road 100 and Brooklyn Boulevard are lined with dining options, including 50’s Grill, a retro-inspired diner, and Captain Crab, known for Cajun-style seafood. Retailers like K&G Fashion Superstore, HOM Furniture, Dollar General and Empire Foods are also scattered around the area. “The grocery shopping is a little sparse. If you don’t have a car, it’s very difficult to get to grocery stores,” Rawls says. “Empire Foods is a specialty Asian foods store. This whole area is a melting pot, very diverse, very popular with first- and second-generation Americans.”

Metro Transit, highways nearby connect Lions to Twin Cities amenities

Metro Transit provides bus service to the area, with stops along main roads, like 53rd Avenue, 55th Avenue and 57th Avenue. North Memorial Health’s Robbinsdale Hospital, a big regional employer, is less than 5 miles away via State Road 100 and Bottineau Boulevard. Interstates 94 and 35W run south toward the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, under 20 miles from Lions. The Mall of America, home to attractions like the Sea Life aquarium and Nickelodeon Universe, is also less than 20 miles away.
