West Palmer Lake
Mid-20th-century homes at affordable prices
Sidewalks line some of the roads in West Palmer Lake. For most of the area, the grassy lawns stretch to the curb, dotted with oak and maple trees. Most of the community is made up of ranch styles and split-levels built between the 1950s and ’70s, although there are some townhouses from the ’70s and ’80s. “The year of build is more recent than North Minneapolis and St. Paul,” says Cenia Badillo, Realtor with Coldwell Banker. “They have more updates and are a little bit bigger.” Prices for a single-family home typically range from $275,000 to $375,000, while townhouses fall between $150,000 and $275,000. “It’s a little cheaper,” Bunay says, with the median price of a single-family home in Minneapolis being about $345,000.West Palmer Lake is prone to winter weather, with an estimated 59 inches of snowfall every year. If snowfall is over an inch, sidewalks are shoveled, while roads are plowed after two and a half inches. Homes closest to Palmer Lake and the surrounding parks are at risk of flooding; flood insurance is required by most private and all federally backed mortgage lenders.
Local middle school offers STEAM magnet program
West Palmer Lake is part of Osseo Area Schools. Palmer Lake Elementary School and Brooklyn Middle STEAM School receive a C-plus from Niche. The middle school offers plenty of programming to help students get exposure to STEAM fields, including job shadowing and community partnerships with organizations like St. Jude’s and the Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division. Park Center Senior High School is an International Baccalaureate World School that earns a B-minus.Parks are along the wetlands of Palmer Lake
Wood chip trails go through the 271-acre basin around Palmer Lake, offering views of wetlands. The area is popular with birders because of the prevalence of species like the Gray Catbird and Northern Cardinal. On the outskirts of the basin is West Palmer Park, a recreational space with a skating rink, playground, basketball courts and athletic fields. At Centerbrook Golf Course, about 3 miles away, people can take lessons on the nine-hole course. “So many families visit there,” Badillo says. Brookdale Library is a hub for community events like book and craft clubs, workshops and Storytime.Easy access to the interstate and Twin Cities
Residents can hop onto Interstate 94, which leads about 10 miles to Downtown Minneapolis and 20 miles to Downtown St. Paul. Metro Transit manages bus routes along Brooklyn Boulevard, 69th Avenue and Xerxes Avenue. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is about 23 miles away, with nonstop service to nearly 160 destinations. North Memorial Health – Robbinsdale Hospital is about 5 miles away.Grocery stores and chain restaurants in Brooklyn Center
Boulevard Market is one of the many shopping centers along Brooklyn Boulevard, a major thoroughfare that borders West Palmer Lake. There, residents can get dinner from African Deli or Xin Xin Chinese. “There are a lot of chain restaurants,” Bunay says, with a Culver’s and Subway in the neighborhood. There are also plenty of options in Downtown Minneapolis; Bunay recommends Manny’s Steakhouse. People can visit stores like Hallel’s African Food Market or travel about 2 miles to Cub Foods for groceries. They can also find locally grown produce and handmade goods at the Brooklyn Center Farmers Market every Thursday afternoon from July to September. Walmart, Home Depot and Target are within 5 miles.Brooklyn Center events held at city parks
Brooklyn Center hosts several events throughout the year, held at the many parks scattered throughout the city. During the colder months, residents can attend the monthly Big Chill festivities with hot cocoa, s’mores, ice skating, or winter games. One of the most anticipated events is the annual Juneteenth Celebration, one of several cultural events the city hosts. Live music plays throughout the day, and there are games and vendors selling food or sharing community resources.
