Community founded in 1832

One of the first historically African American communities to be established in the greater Baltimore area, the neighborhood of Pumphrey, Maryland, was founded in 1832. Taking its name from the nearby Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad’s Pumphrey Station, today, Pumphrey has evolved from a rural landscape to a populated residential community. Nestled between the neighborhoods of Brooklyn Park and Linthicum, Pumphrey also shares a border with the Patapsco River. "Pumphrey is one of those pocket neighborhoods in Baltimore that is small and very close knit," explains Frederick Golding Realtor with RE/MAX. "People tend to stay a really long time and homes get passed down from generation to generation."

Cozy cottages and newer Traditional homes

Comprised of detached single-family homes situated along Belle Grove Road, the neighborhood mostly has older 1950s-style homes. Choose from cozy cottages, split-levels, Cape Cods and ranch-styles, as well as a few newer Traditional builds. For alternative housing options, townhouse and mobile estate communities can also be found here. While the median housing cost is $330,000, prices fluctuate from around $250,000 to over $500,000 depending on home size, style and location. Homes with direct river-front views trend toward higher price points, and it's not uncommon to see residents fishing alongside the riverbanks.

Proximity to all things transit

One of the best things about living in Pumphrey is its proximity to all things transit. With direct access to I-695 and I-295, and its very own Light Rail stop right off Nursery Road, residents of Pumphrey can get to and from Baltimore City and the surrounding suburbs with ease. Plus, with the Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) right next door, residents no longer have to worry about long rides to the airport. Instead, arrive at the airport in less than 15 minutes. And for those who prefer the train, BWI also includes a MARC/AMTRAK station for commuting to and from Washington D.C.

Shopping centers along Ritchie Highway

For on-the-go needs, residents will find fast food options, gas stations and casual eateries at the intersection of B&A Boulevard and Belle Grove Road. Folks can grab a burger from Checkers or pick up some breakfast sweets at Dunkin Donuts. For groceries, there's the local Ferndale Food Lion. Or for a broader selection of retailers, Glen Burnie has two shopping plazas. Located on Ritchie Highway, these shopping centers feature big box stores like Target, Lowes and Big Lots, as well as a Giant Food grocery store.
